Actually, considering all the dumb stuff the Ostrich just did in Sarajevo that one fateful day (Princip was what? The fourth guy to try and kill the Archduke? At what point do you figure it might be a good time to stop riding in an open automobile) on top of being a general imperialist d-bag, I'd say the real idiocy is on the part of the Archduke. Hell, if I'm Gavrilo Princip and the oppressor is gonna open himself up, who isn't going to take that shot? Anyways, I feel that the war was going to happen whether Princip kills the Archduke or not.That's more of the gut opinion than any sort of reasoned analysis, though I did take a class on modern German history last term. But that was all Holocaust. No surprise, what we concentrate on at my school. It's all Holocaust, and general Genocide studies on top of that.

On a side tangent, I'm kind of entertained at the rivalry between the Holocaust guys and the Genocide guys. They really hate each other.

Actually, I believe the reason the Holocaust hits us so deeply is because we know how easily it could have been us. That is, most of us would like to believe that we would be acting the rescuer, not the conciliators, but we cannot really know. And, there are other events in our history that show us this.

Word. I am always a little worried about people who claim they would certainly have been on the good side in the war. It's not like I think I would not be, it's just that I am in no way certain about it. Complying with it would be so much easier and why risk your life when you have a life featuring all the little worries any life has. I get the feeling I would be much busier with studying or working and love and all that then fighting against the oppressors.

Dropping the bomb on Hiroshima? hmmmmmmm........... plausible, but considering the another D-Day on Japan would not only have caused more (in the millions) American and Japanese lives, but a D-Day would have made it take so much longer for Japan's economy to rebuild itself.

As for even inventing the Atom bomb, the Soviets built in (mostly) independently in 1951 anyways.

I think the introduction of European diseases to the new world would qualify by any of the above definitions.

And, though the Holocaust hits us because it is both people like use DOING the damage and like us who were damaged (as opposed to remote historical figures)
far, far more people were killed by that than any outright act of war or repression

That time myself and a friend went on a 'double blind-date' with two random girls, but both of us got really battered in a pub before meeting our dates at the restaraunt. More specifically, the mistake that I'd change was the bit where we went to a bar after dinner and I told my friend that I'd let him switch ladies if he managed to knob-slap his current date.
To cut a long story short, he was really rather keen on my date and so felt like he had nothing to lose by jumping up from his seat, whipping his spam-javelin out, and trying to give his newfound ladyfriend a playful slap around the face with it. She wasn't amused and she made a bit of a hue and cry; needless to say that the sight of a young male standing in the middle of a crowded bar with his wing-wang out somewhat horrified all the nearby members of the paying public, and the bouncers were immediatley convinced that he was a crazed sex-offender in the making, as were the local constabulary. Up until that point it had been going really rather well, and I thought I had a fair chance with either of the females, but after that it wound up being pretty much the worst first-date ever.

So yeah, that's the mistake I'd change.
