You know what happened if you were a slave, and turned the other cheek? They branded the other one, thats what.

And what happened when they DID rebel? They got whipped, at BEST. And, often, the rest of the group along with them.

It took powerful white folks to change things. This does NOT mean that blacks are in any way incapable, it does mean that in the times of slavery they were almost powerless. The only thing they COULD do was to practice subtle dissention. Ridicule in songs the white masters never bothered to hear. Slowing of work ... just enough to not get themselves beaten severely... and most of all, assuring the white folks again and again and again that they truly were as stupid as the white folks thought ... because if they did not, they would have been worse than killed. The greatest acts of sedition were to teach their children to read, to teach them stories of history and the like. NOT taking up arms or fighting.

Lincoln freed the slaves, thinking that the whole lot would rise up and join the ranks of the union armies. They didn't. THAT is the power of slavery.

Except if you had read through my last post, it has little to do with "turning the other cheek" ... at least as you percieve the Christian idea ... and definitely had NOTHING to do with "all you need is love" (from John Lennin, not precisely the Bible anyway...)

There is a time to fight ... I never denied that. And, in fact I said quite clearly above that I was no one to judge McCain if he said some not so nice things about his former torturers.

But, here is the thing. Ghandi was successful, so was Martin Luther. And I guess even Schindler didn't safe too many jews, now did he?

Many slave revolts failed. The successes came not from a revolt, but from escape. Slavery ended not because a bunch of folk rose up and demanded it, but because a US president thought to gain soldiers for his army by freeing the slaves in the south. The Union put former slaves into government positions to insult the south, not because of any sense of it being right. And, as soon as the south gained control of itself again, Jim Crow came in with what many have said might have been worse than slavery. (debateable, for sure). It took, in fact many, many years .. until my lifetime, in fact for the south to be anything close to truly free, without Jim Crow. It took years of education, of watching and seeing the quiet desperation, the side-by-side working. It took white folks seeing and knowing black folks and realizing that they were not so "different" for things to change. THAT doesn't come by force. It took a man by the name of Martin Luther King.

As for the Nazis... well, see, my Dad lived under Nazi occupation in Denmark as a child.

So, maybe you ought to consider if YOU really know of what you speak.

I really wouldn't try to argue with me about history - for I am so, so good at it, you see.

You are good at facts and at discussion.

But, to claim that only violant oppostion is successful ... or that anyone suggesting otherwise is just citing Christian dogma, ... is to forget whole swaths of history. To suggest that anyone thinking unlike you has been "brainwashed" ... tends to be the sort of thing one expects from the uneducated, not the educated ... as I know full well you are.

Sometimes when you look at something too long, you can lose perspective, too. Then again, I never know if you are saying what you believe or "simply" generating discussion.

The analogy I would draw is to George W. Bush. He proclaims himself a Christian. Many people voted for him, largely upon that basis. Yet, I can name no president that has harmed this country more, in the Christian sense, than any other in recent memory. He maintains a war based upon a lie. Health care, children's benefits have all been cut. He actually told agencies NOT to enforce already weak protections for air and water ... because he claims there is " no science" to back these things up. (sorry, but there is ... it was my field) ETC. He was voted in , in part, because a lot of folks liked his ant-abortion stance. Yet, 8 years later and thousands of people have died because of his policies. Abortion is still legal. Views on prayer in school, etc have not changed... etc. The balance is that this so-called "Christian president" (and I don't dispute his beliefs, just his actions) has done far more harm than good.

You really hit the nail on the head! Bush ran as a conservative, but he is the complete opposite! I am a Republican for the following reasons:

1. Pro-Life abortion stance
2. Smaller Federal government and less taxes
3. More liberty for The People

Bush has pretty much stomped on all those for me.

And I would add that Bush has been the worst president for racial relations, as well.

I don't really know if Bush is a racist or not, but his aura seems to be. All I know is that the majority of Blacks hate his guts (not to mention whites as well!).

So looking at that, perhaps Bush is GOOD for racial relations in the United States since so many blacks and whites are unifying to get his administration out of power, and McCain will just be a continuation of that power!

I am not voting for McCain, but I haven't really decided on Obama yet either...

Anyway, back to racism...
We all know that racism is not right (well, that's except if you're a KKK klansmen/klanswomen or part of some other radical racist group). There are many purposes of racism, and I have found that a major one is to blame a minority group because the minority group is harder working (and makes more money) than the dominant race in the country. This means that the minority race is actually wealthier than the dominant race (but this situation is more serious in specific regions instead of certain countries, also this could apply more towards different ethnic groups instead of racial groups).

personally i dont believe in the notion that there is some kind of purity of races that would allow us to really even be able to make such claims. Furthermore, seeing the issue as something of a social construction any attempts to guess at what something like that would be, is simply bound in the expectations of the commenter.
