On a slightly different tack, most spirits have a "classic" mixer - gin and tonic, rum and coke etc.
When someone once gave me a bottle of not-very-good Calvados, I found that the ideal mixer was Dandelion & Burdock. (I don't suppose I'll get that in the U.S.)
