Math Question

Postby The Weird One on Sat May 10, 2008 4:52 pm

Is it possible to make an absolute value function face sideways?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. It's an ancient secret passed on from mentor to apprentice. Only when the apprentice beats the mentor in a fight will he be introduced into the secrets of this ancient craft, at that point the mentor has nothing more to learn to him and he will roam the lands and in time take an apprentice himself.

Instead of looking like "^" that, it would look like this: "<" or this ">"

In that case I would draw a graph and then turn the paper 90° to the left or right.

Why would you want to do that actually?

well, it's for a project. We have to graph a picture and I'd like to do it this way instead of drawing out two lines. I'm just weird like that. :mrgreen:

I think I figured it out. Would changing from " y = | x | " to " x = | y |" work?

Oh, you're talking about the actual product... That would rotate the whole thing 90 degrees.

And if you want it the other way, put a negative sign in front of your abs function.

easy:
x=|y|

though, really it's not a function

you could easily figure out a way to do with a parametric equation though, I'm sure

I'm assuming you are doing this for some kind of high school math class.
What level are you at right now?
Cause if you dont understand any of it, I'm guessing its one of the lower ones.
Maybe if we knew we could help a bit more.
