NIN - The Slip

so, Nine Inch Nails has pulled a Radiohead publicity stunt and released the new album for free online. in case you don't have it yet, and are interested, here's the link:

anyone else give it a listen yet? i've listened to it through a few times now, and i've got mixed feelings. the first two tracks, 999,999 and 1,000,000 kind of feel like a re-working of Pinion and Wish, from the seminal 'Broken' EP.

Discipline sounds so much like The Hand That Feeds, upon first listen, it sounds like it could even be a Weird Al parody.

i'm a huge fan, and i'm looking for things to like on this record, but there's not much. The Four of Us are Dying is decent. i tend to like the instrumental stuff.
have you ever seen an idealist with grey hairs on his head?
or successful men who keep in touch with unsuccessful friends?
you only think you did
i could have sworn i saw it too
but as it turns out it was just a clever ad for cigarettes.

yeah, The Fragile is the last truly amazing album.

i actually really like With Teeth, too. some really good material there, but somehow a lot of the subjects felt less raw and fresh than they did when he had written about them previously.

kind of like when The Cure put out that eponymous album a few years back. it was getting hard to really believe that Robert Smith felt the angst he was singing about, but it was good material.

and the problem of Nine Inch Nails is that Reznor just isn't going to write March of the Pigs again. as much as we fans all keep hoping he will, he's just not. cause he already did.

The real problem is that he said he was going to retire four times and still keeps pumping out albums, each one weaker than the last. Rusty Nails 2 was the best album, and that was mostly B-Sides...

With_Teeth was horrible and never should have been released as it was... Then Ghosts I-IV came out, and I was all excited, and it just sounded like extended versions of the same songs.

I still think Broken and Fixed were the best mainstream releases... A lot of imports were really good, too, but they were mostly illegal bootlegs.
