Where should I go on vacation?

Postby btownmeggy on Tue Apr 15, 2008 9:17 am

After a disastrous flight from Sao Paulo to Houston, I am in possession of 2 $200 travel vouchers. I have to use them before August 29th. I'm willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars over the voucher price for each ticket, so let's say I'm looking for somewhere fantastic for two people to go where the tickets from Washington DC or NYC to the destination are less than $400 each.

Are Montreal and Puerto Rico my only options? It seems that flights to Europe are currently much more expensive than back in those heady days when you could fly NYC to London for $150.

Help me, Chatter Box, you're my only hope.

And you must leave from NYC or Washington D.C., not Houston/Austin?

You can get a round trip to Key West Floria for just under $400 depending on the airline and the length of the flight. Do the pub crawl, watch sunset from the pier or go on one of those sunset cruises from either an authentic sail boat (the Western Union) or a pirate ship, and of course see all the interesting meuseums and other things to do.

Gotcha, cause Houston has reasonable flights to Belize generally. Cheap vacation, english speaking (although I gather you are bi-lingual, so that doesn't matter).

Yellowstone? Granted you would have to go through DIA in Denver and then take a good several hour drive, but there are quite a few sites along the way. Maybe Gettysburg? Just throwing out a few suggestions.

Yes, lots of Antillean locations are attractive and pretty affordable. Definitely a location of interest.

Saba has a mountaintop rainforest, snorkeling, limited nightlife, maximum hammock time, all on an island of about 1500 people on 5 square miles.

Of course, NYC to New Orleans for carousing on Bourbon Street, drooling in the Garden District, etc. can be had for 200 or so round

I live really close to New Orleans right now. It has 'been done' ad nauseum.

I had a "friend"/client who was from the DR. He was real shady, but bragged about the beaches and the affordability, I had a mutual friend who visited. If you can handle the machismo of the residents, then second hand accounts say it is acceptable.

And if you live close to NOLA, why on earth would you move? If I was able, I would move down to that area in a heartbeat, and I have quit drinking. . .

I've spent a good deal of my life in Latin America. If the piropos and catcalls become intolerable, I fight back---and, wonderfully, machistas' own machismo allows me to do so quite successfully and without reprisal.

usually you can find tickets to places like barcelona for about £110, so about 220 dollars, so if u didnt mind spending a little bit of your own money then you can go there.

Pittsburgh is decent, but probably not much for someone from NY.

I found tickets for $198 from DC to San Juan, PR, and I have lots of friends I could stay with there, or at least go boozing with.

I think it may be August in Puerto Rico for me!

If you were up to it, I'd suggest a trip to Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood Oregon. Or to Crystal Mountain on Rainer. But only if you felt like skiing/snowboarding. And the season is drawing to a close......

Barring that, some of North Cali's beaches are nice and generally are not crowded whenever I'm down.

Hiking the Olympic Mts is another option.
