omg I'm going to Berkeley

Postby OnlyAmbrose on Tue Apr 15, 2008 8:50 pm

So basically I got a full ride to Berkeley and I accepted. I'm still getting over this, because it's the last place I ever expected to go to college. Part of me is really excited and part of me fears for my soul

#1 wherever evil is, God is ... it's up to you to find what you seek.

#2 Berkeley's reality is not the reputation. What you will find is people with a whole range of ideas, all across the spectrum... and a strange mix of folks who are willing to hang out with, talk to folks who don't necessarily agree with them.

#3 College is the best opportunity you will ever have to meat people from all over with ideas you have never heard, to learn things that will astound you. Don't be naive don't be tricked, demand truth... but DO cease the opportunity to learn. If you are firm in your belief, have been taught well, then you will not stray. Use this as an opportunity to challange, to be sure. Most likely, you will change small things .. and grow as a result, but core values only change if there is a really, really good reason. And if you find that reason .. then it is a GOOD reason.

#4 DO shop at the Berkeley Bowl .. at least once.

Yeah, I went to their open house, and I was actually pleasantly surprised to find that to be mostly true. You do meet all sorts, including nutcases of all kinds, but I met a surprising number of more or less sane people ;)

That's super!! You're from California? I hope you like and are ready to compete with really smart Asians (no offense?)!

I'm willing to say... I'm going to Berkeley's primary national rival for my PhD... ;)

Because they get suicidal from the stupidity of all non-asians.

Berkeley is both a University and a town. It is one campus of the University of CA system. Each campus is unique.

As for how good it is, among other places, check out your periodic table, near the bottom, for a hint (Berklium)

Oh right, so it's one of those nerdy Science places then. Gotcha.

Try one of THE science places .. along side the much younger MIT, but it also has extremely strong programs in literature, history, etc. -- it is the first west coast university, home to more nobel laureate than any other university ... and in many fields.

It is not best in EVERYTHING, but definitely a wide range of subjects.

Nah, I bet Harvard has way more.

Also, it's pretty common knowledge that Oxford University is the best in the world at the most subjects.

Berkeley most definitely has far more noble laureate. Harvard is best at law, Business and so forth ... and though they do boast nobles in Economics, Literature, etc. ... Berkeley has more.

Berkeley's graduate literature program is often rated above Harvard's, but that is debateable.

AS for Oxford ... well, I have met several visiting professors from there. Seems they like to come here to the US to learn the latest in research.... : )

But seriously, at that level, who is best is really just a matter of opinion, which professor you happen to relate to and which research program you happen to be attracted to, able to join. The competition, like good sport, just pushes each to excell a little better.

Nah, Wikipedia says Harvard definitely has more. I think you're just making it up because you live near Berkley.

But league tables rate Oxford's research to be of the highest standard in the world.
Sounds to me like they visit to teach the US the latest in research...

PLAYER57832 wrote:But seriously, at that level, who is best is really just a matter of opinion

1. Not really, Oxford and Harvard rule you.
2. Who cares, my opinion is more important than yours anyway.
