Real or Scam?

Postby static_ice on Wed Apr 09, 2008 6:26 pm

I got this email, and I do know better but I can't figure out how it would be a scam if it was... unless they plan to spam my phone with netherlandic telemarketing advertisers. And the linked site is giving me no clues at all. :-k

If this is true then why do you have to go to a bank in the Netherlands?

You give them details, they follow up, you give them more details, arrange to meet in Netherlands, they mug you and steal your identity.. *yawn*

Pretty straight forward that it's a scam. The first reaction that you have to something is usually correct in those kinds of situations.

Static, stop listening to them!

they're just jealous that you've won the prize money!

also, could you maybe help out a friend of mine? he's a nigerian monarch who has billions of dollars and wants to share a few million with you. but he's in some trouble, and just needs 10,000 bucks to get access to his fortune.

seriously, no scam!

also, i have a great timeshare opportunity to tell you about, but later, after you've had about 5 or 6 drinks. try my specialty, a Roofie Colada!

Static, I think you desperate need for a scholarship is clouding your judgement... It's a scam bud... First of all, nobody gives out million dollar scholarships, that's just stupid. Second of all, it's from another country, one that you presumably don't know much about and that will be difficult for you to find out about. Second of all, why would some organizations giving out money to Americans be both supported by the UN and the EU. It doesn't make sense... Now, why would they write you and English email and give you an Italian (or something) website? Why would you know their language? You wouldn't, that's why they gave you an English email, and a website that tells you nothing. Remember, if it's a scam they want to do as little work as they can, keeping you in the dark as much as possible while finding out as much information about you as they can. You call them, they get more and more information with you, you don't get any money. Lastly, always remember the Nigerian Prince... Always... Lastly, google is your friend.

Check up with the EU and UNO to see if it's a real legit company. Then if it checks out there, go ahead and contact them.

Really, you can contact them if you want, but as soon as they ask for anything that they can scam you with (it can include your phone) then you'll want to contact them. If they want a bank account then tell them to do something like opening a Swiss bank account and depositing it there for a later wire transfer.

Dude, something very similar to this happened to me...I called as a joke...they asked all kinds of questions about my financial position and things...I was nearly bankrupt, but I didn't want them to know that so I made it seem like I had a decent amount of money....I thought "What the hell, I have nothing to lose."...and I gave them whatever they asked for...I thought if I got even a portion of what they promised (in my case, it was only $500,000), it would be worth it...

Well, I got the whole $500,000! It was the best thing that ever happened to me!

I pre-paid my rent for the next 10 years. I pimped my '92 Honda Civic with $65000 of trim and a $15000 stereo. And I got huge credit and I maxed out my new $50,000 Platinum Visa! I'm runnin' low on coin now, but I'm taking a loan tomorrow and I'm gonna triple it all at the Casino this weekend!!!

Take my advice man, jump in with both feet.

Duh.

On the other hand, if all those e-mails are legit then I am suprised that digging up chests full of money isn't a bigger industry in Africa (with so many chests burried around, you could dig anywhere and you would probably dig on up  )

2. they have now validated your email and will therefore inundate you with more scams, sales offers, etc.

3. Phone calls can be rerouted to countries without a lot of regulation .... and you can end up with hefty charges. This happened to folks I know a few years ago. They called an 800 number about a sweepstakes, only to find $700, $900 and more charges on their bills. The phone company insisted the charges had to be paid because they originated internationally. The attorney's general, got involved, but I don't remember how it was resolved or if it was .. but BEWARE!!!

4. Use your brain. Sorry, but you have already said you are heading to college. Though College is not quite the "big bad world", you are entering the adult world and need to watch out for your self. At least you were smart enough to ASK when you were not sure. However, I have to say that this really should not even have been a question to anyone brought up in the internet age, as you must have been. (if you are just graduating high school now). Sorry, but this is the mom in me speaking. Go NOW to the sites mentioned above, but also check out the Attorney's Generals offices of your state and the US government. They have good information on scam detection. And, remember the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true ... it probably IS"
