I'm not sure cartographers will ever received badges or custom rank icons, but I could see something similar to a Medal. I know lack does plan to create Tournament medals, and some other various game related medals, I could definitely see Cartography, perhaps various styles for 1, 5, 10+ maps, being a medal.

so if you were a mod or cartography plus you had 2 maps quenched and had run 5 tournaments you'd have 3 badges under your name. wouldn't that get a little crowded.

what the mods had to do was pick which one they wanted for their badge. A few of use could've had 3 or 4.

I've just had a brilliant (i think idea after watching the War Trains series DVD)....

If we want to allocate badges/ranks whatever....why not structure them on the actual units in the armies.
we could have:
1. Engineers - general troops (commentors)
2. Logistics - (xmlers and coders)
3. Surveyors - (mapmakers)

Good plan? Probably not, but i thought i'd throw it in there (apologies if it has already been suggested) :)

He he! that thought had crossed my mind too mibi, but i didn't want to commit it until someone else offered it first...thanks for being a forerunner!! :)

Hmm... I guess that would include me, then? ;)

I think medals could be fun, but I accept the concern that it should be distinct from the moderator badges... not that I would be upset with some newb PM'ing qwert for help instead of me, but it seems like there are already so many badges and titles at this site that I'm never sure who does what (example: what does a "Wise Man" do?).

And as somebody who already has as many 'official' duties around here as he can keep up with, by creating medals that go in somebody's personal info you're adding to somebody's work load... though not mine, because I don't have the power to edit such things.

If the Foundry were to come up with it's own medals that could be included in somebody's signature or avatar it would put the burden of displaying the medal on the user and not on somebody like Andy, for whom adding and updating everybody's medals may not be a good use of time. Plus, we have no idea what Lack's timeline might be to implement something like this - he seems to have his hands full right now - so creating a medal that I could drop on the left side of my sig or a bar that goes across the bottom of my avatar would be a first step that we could implement right now. And we'd have more flexibility with size.

to be honest i don't really care. i mean think about it, do we really need several badges under our names to feel respected or something??

i don't those that appreciate my work as a map maker pm me or thank me via posts in the forum and that makes me glad. most people already know who's a map maker and if they like your map(s) they tell you. that's all i need.

same goes to the tourney organizers. the best ones are well known and their work is appreciated.

Your being glad:
DiM wrote:...and that makes me glad.

Pollyanna (Wittier) is a story from my childhood (and probably a lot of others in USA and English speaking countries) who is brought to a small town as an orphan and adopted by cranky Mrs Snow...she finds all sorts of ways to turn the town around from being a lot of old basket cases to happy people by playing the "glad game". It's also a movie done several times over.
No offence DiM,,,just a good laugh and my wicked mind sense of humour

I have to agree with Wicked on this one... I think it's the first time.

Badges would seem kindof like the Boyscouts or getting a little gold star next to your name in the 2nd grade for not disrupting class.
Our self-made banners/avatars are a good enough display, IMHO.

No qwerts your idea is far to similar to team badges. The last thing we need is confusion over who does what ;)

I have an idea for placement of a mapmaker badge

u know where it says our rank, then title? how about after the title there could be a little mapmaker badge. and add a times sign for each map, so like
