I don't check specifically for cyclists.

I check for my own saftey and to make sure my car door doesn't get damaged. In Boston cars zip right along so close to parked cars you gotta check.

In general I respect cyclists. However, those bike messengers that zip through traffic, cut in and out, and completely disobey all the rules of the road are like a cancer on our city streets. They should be cut out and/or irradiated like a cancerous tumor.

The main point being... yes there are asshole drivers... and yes there are also asshole bicyclists.

Check your mirrors! I just watched a guy back into my car in a parking lot because he wasn't looking.
The big trouble with dumb bastards is that they are too dumb to believe there is such a thing as being smart.

Yesterday I was driving and came to a stop light. A cyclist drove right through the tiny space between my car and the one to my right on a two-lane road. He almost ate pavement just for being impatient. Being cordial on the road works both ways.

Cyclists can use sidewalks. Anybody on a bicycle who so bad at steering they can't go on the sidewalks probably shouldnt be going on the road either.

When I get my driver's license, first thing I plan to do is to drive cross-country blindfolded.

no they can't. at least not according the state laws of any on the East Coast that i know of.

check your facts. cyclists are considered motor vehicles in most places.

and the cordial driving thing going both ways... it carries A LOT MORE WEIGHT when one person can KILL the other. driver's have a greater onus to observe safety because of the power they wield.

I like to bicycle. That said, when I am going down the street I always give a little extra space for my own safety when I am coming up to a car that I see has someone in it.

I was actually once hit on the arm by an opening car door while cycling, I got a briuse but didn't fall off or something so I guess it's not as bad as everyone says unless you drive straight into it. Lucky thing I knew the owner or I might have kicked the car's door in return.

But if a cyclist hits your open car door frontally he'll probably deal severe damage to it, which you have to pay for in addition to what you'll have to pay him when you get sued for not watching out.

And anyway in not even trying to be considerate you're acting against the only commandment of the Cult of Cod, "Don't be a jerk".

Cyclists invariably have the moral high ground. I can feel the irritation from drivers when I scoot past them as they sit and sweat and honk in their end-to-end steel coffins waiting for the lights to change. Been knocked off my bike twice, once by someone who drove onto a roundabout withotu looking (that one HURT) and once by a dorrie who turned left without CHECKING HER MIRRORS.

Most cyclists: have minimal protection and so are vulnerable; do no harm to the environment or to air quality in our cities; promote good health.

Most drivers: are encased in steel; f*ck up the environment and air quality with no thought for anyone else; and are fat.

We win.

If you're using your mirrors to look for cyclists you're doing something wrong.

Along those same lines, do you know what motorcyclists are known as? Organ Donors.
