Prince Harry returning from Afghanistan

Postby Fruitcake on Fri Feb 29, 2008 8:26 am

Shame that the American website, the Drudge report, let the cat out of the bag about Prince Harry being in Afghanistan so now he has to come home. All the reports show him to be an exemplary fighter.

Oh well, bit late for the Taliban et al, after all their comments about looking forward to the 'Blonde' (err...not quite) Prince coming and their intentions to make a movie about his beheading. The phrase 'perfidious Albion' was not coined for nothing.

However, Middle East broadcasters and publishers honoured a deal struck with the UK media that kept the deployment of Prince Harry in Afghanistan a secret for 10 weeks.

Glad to see he kept up the tradition of the British Royal family serving on the front line.

Yeh shame they broke it really. Its not exactly a matter of intense public interest which couldn't wait until he got back from his tour. All credit to the lad for going though, he obviously had to put the army under a hell of a lot of pressure to make it happen.

Just heard about it last night, though I was wondering if he did go, because back when it was first under debate for him to go or not, it looked like he wold do most anything to go. The Royal Family just got major respect from me with this (at least Prince Harry anyways).

He threatened to resign his Commission if he was not allowed to go and do the job he was trained for, simple as that.

I have read that he finally received his orders from none other than his Grandmother.

I watched an interview with him on the TV just now. He is maturing into a serious individual, is not afraid to 'get involved', and, if you ignore some of the obvious set up sequences, it is clear that he is actually someone who is worthy of respect. The men get on with him well, he has a natural way about him (his use of the word 'mate' to a Tankie was as ordinary as anyone) and he relishes the hardship he has had.

After all, this was no sinecure, but a serious position in an area I would eschew quite frankly. Helmand province is not exactly the safest place to be.

I did love his reference to "Terry Taliban" never heard that one before.

I believe the Daily Star had the headline: "When Harry met Tali".
Groan...

He also killed 30 Taliban soldiers by ordering an air strike on their position, but that piece of info can from The Sun, which hasn't got the best repuation for truthfulness.

It was actually some German and Australian newspapers that leaked it and then the american website posted it. I wasn't really surprised when I found out though.

Is military service absolutely required of the royal family in England or is it just a tradition?

Lucky Englishmen to have a prince who fights in wars instead of just sending missiles and other men to do his dirty work. Perhaps monarchy is a way to go after all. :D

Then again, maybe not. 8-[

Extracts from the Times Newspaper (London):

Al-Qaeda websites posted death threats against him yesterday after the worldwide coverage of his ten weeks in Helmand province, Afghanistan. In stark contrast, army message boards carried unanimous praise for the Prince.

Prince Harry’s deployment to Afghanistan has won plaudits from his fellow soldiers. Sending their comments to an army chatline service, they praised the Prince unanimously “for having the balls” to take on the Taleban and criticised the foreign media who broke the story.

“Damn right, respect to the bloke for getting on the ground,” one wrote. “Well done Ginge!” another wrote.

One soldier confirmed that Prince Harry had been on active service throughout his ten weeks in southern Afghanistan and had not been kept away from the Taleban. “Well done, and all I’ll say is he hasn’t sat in Bastion [Camp Bastion, the British main base in central Helmand province] for three months,” he wrote.

Prince Harry’s exploits against the Taleban produced a mass of favourable comments about the Royal Family. “Well done that fine young representative of the Royal Family,” one said. “And people wonder why we respect our Royal Family more than the Government,” another wrote.
(Well that is a given. Fruitcake)

The Times has seen messages posted on a password-protected al-Qaeda forum, al-Ekhlaas, calling for Prince Harry to be beheaded and a video of his murder to be sent to the Queen.

Arabic news items and photographs of the Prince on duty in Helmand were added to the jihadi sites. One posting said: “Nothing will break the heart of his grandmother but only if she loses him. My dear brothers in Allah, carry on provoking to kidnap this precious infidel.”

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taleban told The Times by telephone from an undisclosed location. “The Royal Family is now directly participating in the aggression against Muslims.” In an interview last week, Prince Harry acknowledged that on his return to Britain he could be a “top target” for home-grown jihadists who were sympathetic to the Taleban.

Brigadier Andrew Mackay, Commander Task Force Helmand, revealed that Prince Harry had recently been involved in a major operation to disrupt Taleban lines of communication. “In doing so, he has shared the same risks, endured the same austerity and undergone the same moments of fear and euphoria that are part of conducting operations in this most complex environment.”

He certainly would be a big prize for the terrorists if he was ever captured. I was thinking that if Al Qaeda ever did nab him if that would turn the majority of British people to support the war. I don't think most British do right now but if Harry were captured or killed it could really set a lot of people off. just speculating here.

Not just the British, it may also galvanise Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the Commonwealth.

and apparently the story broke in an Aussie womens magazine many weeks ago but no one paid any attention to it until it appeared on the US website.
