People from the United States

I dunno what part of Britain you're from, but I'm venturing a guess that this would be kind of like flying the IRA flag in London (if they have one).

I meant, who gives a toss about nappy rash's attempts at trolling?

Trolling? I'm sorry, just because the issue of the CS battle flag is too far beyond your political correctness toleration quotient doesn't mean you get to call threads about it trolling, you deceiving, thieving sophist.

This isn't an issue, nappy, it's another opportunity for you to puff your little pigeon chest out and sneer at anyone who calls you on this twattery. Trolling, in other words. I could almost hear you squealing with excitement like a 7-year old hopped up on tartrazine when you changed your avvy.

No, you can't almost hear me, that would be the drugs, you cactus smoking yippie metro. Go back to reading illustrated Das Kapital. I can see my Confederate flag isn't doing wonders for your blood pressure, and I'd hate to add to your medical problems.

See? Trolling. if this was a debate about freedom of expression - fine. But it's not: it's about goading people who do actually give a shit into responding so you can whap out your thesaurus again. Nothing wrong with trolling in my book, but when it's about stroking your inflamed ego, like i said: who gives a toss?

Whap out my thesaurus? The fact you must recourse to a dictionnary and/or wikipedia to understand my posts doesn't mean I used a thesaurus to compose them.

I personally hate it, but I think people should be able to fly it if they want to, provided it's below the Union flag in accordance to U.S. Flag Code.

I have no problems depending on the reason for flying it.

If you're flying it because you believe in States' rights (which was the backbone of the backbone of the Civil War), then it's fine. And in fact, I agree with you. I strongly believe in State's rights, and that the Federal Government shouldn't interfere in State, and Local issues.

But if you're flying it because the confeds, and, thus, the slave owners flew it. Then I do mind. That's bigoted racism.

Problem is, no one knows why he's flying it. There's no explanation in his sig, or in the avatar itself. For all the world, the most obvious reason why he's flying it is that he supports the Confederacy. That's what the flag was made for! That's why people in the South fly it today!

The very fact that there's a question about whether or not he's a racist tells you something about the power of that flag.

Having lived in the south, I can say there are still people there fighting the war. There is so much close-minded bigotry and racism in the southeast, it's pathetic.

He's got you fair and square here Yappy, hasn't he... We all know this isn't a thread about freedom of expression. It's a pathetic attempt to provoke others into disagreement. The exact definition of Trolling.

Haha - Don't you love the 15 year olds you see who claim that 'Drugs are bad' or 'Straight Edge for life!' - such conviction - Can't wait to see Naps as a 19/20 year old stoner.

I don't think Yappy and Life Experience are ever going to coincide. I should imagine he'll continue to reside in his little comforting 19th century nationalist bubble for a long while yet.

Meh. It's amusing at times.

Guiscard, heavycola came up with some reasonably amusing flames. Either come up with one or take your prissy patronization elsewhere.

provocation I would guess.

I am as the gadfly comicrentboy...as the gadfly...

Not that I'm trying to sound pretentious in any way, but it'll be an amusing test of rentboy's googling skills to see if he gets the reference.

Besides rentboy, there are rebel flags in France too, which some people get all het up about.

The problem is that the link between slavery and the civil war is not as strong as most people think it is.

Even Lincoln, oft cited as the person whose election caused the south to break off said this

"I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was."

If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them.

My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery.

If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.

What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union.

I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views."

Clearly then the civil war was not mostly or in fact the great part about slavery, thus the confederate flag is less than 50 percent about slavery.

That being said, I personally find it in bad taste just as I would find it annoying if someone was flying a swastika but at the same time different symbols have different meanings for different people. The swastika is actually a symbol for peace and understanding for the buddist? or B'on? religion. Likewise although I would not fly one I don't see the reason others should be insulted for doing so.
