How much luck is in 1v1?

Postby Root Ranger on Sat Feb 23, 2008 12:12 pm

Seriously, I think 1v1 is mostly luck. Someone gets lucky at the start and take a continent. Then sometimes rarely (with the bad dice of course, always favoring one person) the other player gets their luck back. But by then the game has been decided. What are your opinions?

1v1 takes a lot of skill. Occasionally luck is a major factor but not always

I say it takes a bit of both, like 70 30. I just won two games where my opponent had australia in round 1 and I still managed to beat them.

Theres skill involved in where the play first turn and where to place men if your down or if your up. Its not all luck.

Based on the dice shaftings I've had today in a few of these, I'm going with 50-50. A lot of luck involved.

Id say if you play no cards or chained and adjacent the drop 80% of the time doesnt make a difference its how you and your opponent play the game, i have played many 1 v 1 where the opponent takes australia then sits them in indonisia with a 2 on siam and doesnt do anything with them while you sweep the rest of his ones and then control another continent giving you the upper hand.

I think it really depends on the map in question something like waterloo I'd say skill is 80 or 90 percent of the game whereas something like doodle earth 1v1, maybe 80 percent luck

It's not just the map but the settings... going first with unlimited forts for example increases the luck factor very considerably in favour of the guy who happens to go first.

There is another part of "skill" that I think is worth looking at by itself - "map knowledge" - most maps have a number of subtle intricacies, whether they be key territories that can easily reach a lot of bonuses in order to break them, or whether they are ways to deceive in the fog (a great aid if you know the map better than your opponents)...

In fact most of my strategy for Waterloo 1v1s is based on these deceptions and I have to completely change my playing style when there is no fog...

Ask Benjikat about Waterloo. I reckon he's lost about 9% of 1v1 no cards in the fog.

The luck effect varies from map to map.. the bigger and more complex, the more skill determines outcome...

there are a few exceptions though... a few maps can get massive continent bonuses, which can decide the game before it starts...

world 2.1 is the most even of all maps ... its so big, with bonuses small relative to size, that skill plays the largest roll... relatively speaking

Actually a bit less than that :) - I've lost 9 games out of 108 (and two of those are you...)

80% luck, 20% skill imo. Just have to attack attack attack. I've always been in support of the active neutrals idea from the boardgame, where you 4 neutral armies and you bribe them by giving them cards to attack your opponent (you control the attacks)

Yes you do (which is why it's so much fun), but the skill comes in the where, how many and how. Most players seem to think they have to deploy in a single place each turn :?

If you genuinely think that all 1v1s are 80% luck, then you'll agree to a series of games with me - worse case you should win 40% of the games right? So with our respective scores at the moment you would take a net amount of points off me. Waterloo no cards seq fog, obviously. How many games do you think it'd take to even out the "luck"?

PM me if you're up for it :)

As a seperate point, just look up Clive's record on all sorts of maps and settings for far better proof that skill can be major part of these games.
