I'm sure that your concept of a person without an accent is different from sam_levi's definition of an accentless person. Thereby proving that they are both actually accents.

Exactly true... I go on conferences to the US with work each year and one year we were sitting around at dinner. There was a lady there who had the thickest accent I've ever heard, excuse my ignorance of American accents, I can't actually remember where she was from. She insisted that she had absolutely no accent and we couldn't convince her otherwise!

Fact is, people from your area who have a fairly neutral, or mild accent (by which I mean neutral for the area, not absolutely neutral) are always going to sound like they don't have an accent to you, because you are used to how they speak.

Anyway, back on topic, Americans will always be Yanks to Poms and Aussies, complaining about it will only make us say it more

I'll bet there are a lot of British citizens who don't speak "the Queen's English". And certainly we Americans do not. I personally speak the Midwest North American English dialect. None are better than the others because they all serve us equally well in our own locations.

But to return to the topic . . . the only Yankees left are those playing baseball in New York. Most people do not care, but I personally take offense at the various groups who chose to identify themselves as "Irish-Americans", "African-Americans", "Mexican-Americans", etc. as I believe that only serves to divide us. Citizens of the United States of America are properly referred to as "Americans" and that is what we should take pride in first.

Someone earlier said that America was two continents so we shouldn't be called that. Should we ONLY refer to English citizens as Europeans then? Of course not and I doubt they would prefer that.

I doubt citizens of any other country in North or South America want to be called Americans. Citizens of Peru are Peruvians, Canada has Canadians and Venezuela produces leaders with big mouths that even the King of Spain tells to "shut up"!

you know how that name came about, right? it's good story, look it up.

also, Texas sucks. I'm a Yankee, and damn proud of it. my family came over here from England about 300 years ago.

you should be proud of being a Yank. we rule, and without us, our limey friends across the pond would be speaking German right now, instead of the Queen's english.

also, don't forget about how the rebs called us Yanks in the civil war...

seriously, Yank should be a huge compliment... It was Yankees who won the American Revolution, it was Yankees who defeated the Rebel fools in the American Civil War, and it is the Yankees who are the greatest baseball team in the world.

so, i mean, what's the problem?

I think referring to English citizens as europeans is sort off the same thing as you calling yourself americans...

You know, with europe and n-america being continents and all that....

Yep, the logic is definitely wrong. People from the US call themselves Americans because we've always been a rather pompous and self centered country  The country name is the United States, not America. America is the name of both continents (of course people say America all the time in reference to the US, but its not actually correct).

Think of how we call our country America, while Canadians refer to it as The States (a much more accurate name). But I would still fight Canada, so don't go calling me a traitor.

But then what should we call ourselves? United States...i...ans? Residences of the US? Americans is the only title that works, so we stick with it. Besides, I doubt a Mexican or a Brazilian would say "I'm an American." It's not like we're encroaching their turf or anything.

Need I remind you that the Yankees is often reffered to as the people of the East Coast, or more centered, New England? Not to mention there were about 27 states during the Civil War, just a little more then half of what there is now.

so, i mean, what's the problem?
That since then, numerous more states have been added to the Union that were not even territories, let alone states, during either war. Plus, the North was not exactly "Numbah 1!" in terms of ethics during the Civil War, and the states since then really don't want much to do with that.

does it bother all of the other US citizens on this forum that our cultural, intellectual, historical, legal and financial epicenter is in the Northeast?
Not exactly true you know. Did you know that the Oregon Trail was first traveled backwards by the group now known as the Reverse Astorians? That Wyoming is home to the first National Park in the word (Yellowstone)? That Texas and Wyoming produce most of the oil out here? I could go on, but that would take to much time.

i'm sorry, we're just the best there is.... that's why. Come out here and see for yourself, and if you can't cut it here, you can't cut it anywhere.
That so? Come out here to the Rockies and see how well you do at this elevation. See what -20 degrees is like for 4-5 months straight. See why people out West don't like people that look down their noses at us because they think that they are culturally superior to us like you. Not to mention, which state is known as the Equality State for giving women the right to vote? Which state was founded because people back East didn't know religious tolerance if it bit them on the nose? Which states provide you with coal, oil, leather, and other things that you take for advantage? Sure as hell at you Yanks out East.

No! We don't call ourselves North Americans . . just Americans. So it's not the same thing.

And as for the northeast of the United States being everything our friend from Philadelphia claims it is, well he just needs to live somewhere else to find out how 90% of this country feels that he's wrong. For instance, the state of California alone has a bigger economy than the rest of the entire nation. If you subtract them from our nation's gross domestic product, the U.S. would rank 8th in the world with California at number 7. So I would not exactly say the northeast is the nation's financial epicenter. That's a fallacy based on Wall Street's location and not where the actual money is at.

Cultural, intellectual, historical?

OK, nowhere beats New York City for the arts en masse, but there are certainly quality theatre groups, ballets, symphonies and opera companies all over the country. Chicago, Seattle, San Diego, New Orleans, Memphis, Dallas, and Denver can all compete in quality if not quantity.

Intellectual bragging rights? There are some damn fine universities in the northeast, but really no better than the midwest, southeast or northwest. Silicon Valley . . . Microsoft . . . Los Alamos National Laboratory are all real evidence of intellectual capability elsewhere.

Historical??? Don't make me laugh. This is just typical east coast egotism at work here. The first Europeans arrived in the New York area in 1524. Almost 900 years earlier a city of 40,000 people was already established and flourished for over 300 years in central Illinois. It is referred to now as Cahokia.

Get a clue east-coaster! It may be ONE of the hot places now, but it still has a long way to go before it can make the claims you are making and not have any challengers.

That's the whole point. "of America" is referring to the continent(s).

How about they call us yanks

The fact that Statesians is not an appropriate term is what causes this problem in the first place. I have no problem referring to myself as an American because I am one. But if a Canadian or a Mexican also wants to be called an American then that is fine by me because they are as well.

I find it hilarious whenever a small snowstorm shuts down the eastern seaboard. Every winter here it's -40 and -85 windchills and it doesn't even get mentioned in the news, but when it gets to the single digits in New York everyone's complaining about how tough they have it. Poor fools can't even drive in the snow. Lets see a Northeasterner deal with a broken down truck in the middle of winter, miles from the nearest town. Have fashion and theatre come to your rescue then.
Also, not all companies are in the Northeast. Ever heard of 3M, General Mills, Best Buy, Target, Cargill, Hormel, Medtronic? And those are just based in Minnesota.
The people in the rest of the country are far nicer too. When I was in Boston, all I ever experienced was cursing, violent drivers, and general slobs. I met one nice person in Philadelphia, and he was a tourist. You couldn't pay me to live out east.
The big trouble with dumb bastards is that they are too dumb to believe there is such a thing as being smart.
