Ish. There's a difference between patriotism and jingoism that's too often overlooked. I'm proud to come from a nation which has produced such great people as Winston Churchill, Nelson, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and so on, but I doubt that would affect my judgement much if I had to choose something on basis of my nationality (because it's the present that controls the decisions of the moment ultimately, not the past).

Anyway, what does flag-waving have to do with being patriotic? I see that more as a statement about oneself than about the country the flag of which you're waving. A visual version of "look at me, I'm PATRIOTIC, I love MY COUNTRY, I'm PROUD to be a whatever" usually with an addition along the lines of "and if you disagree with me you're not patriotic". It's really just a means of creating an in-group and an out-group.

The U.N.'s policy of don't shoot unless fired upon is by far the dumbest policy for a peace keeping force. All they can do is watch while the people they were sent to protect get slaughtered. If they were actually allowed to kill the people commiting the atrocities, maybe there would be less genocides.
