It's situational for me. I suppose defense is the key word, I wouldn't die in Iraq for instance. If we were attacked I would fight, but since that pretty much won't happen I suppose it doesn't mean much.

i consider myself american but i will never cheer for them in football.

my true colors are red, white, and green with a eagle in the middle when it comes to sports. thats the way i was raised, and it will always be that way since my love for football goes beyond any patriotism

True, but it wasn't Iraq that hit the WTC and the terrorist organization that committed the crime has no physical boundaries. The last truly just war the US fought in was the Korean War, and that occurred over 50 years ago.

So, liberating Kuwait was a bad thing?

Our motives were good ones, but because we pulled out afterwards we allowed even more violence to occur. Kind of the opposite of now...not very crystal clear motives but a will to wait things out.

Kinda ironic, actually. If we were going to go into Iraq, we would have been more justified then...

Yup, wouldn't have been anywhere near as unpopular as it is now. It is, admittedly, strange.

This is probably about right.

Anyway, what does flag-waving have to do with being patriotic? I see that more as a statement about oneself than about the country the flag of which you're waving. A visual version of "look at me, I'm PATRIOTIC, I love MY COUNTRY, I'm PROUD to be a whatever" usually with an addition along the lines of "and if you disagree with me you're not patriotic". It's really just a means of creating an in-group and an out-group.

The U.N.'s policy of don't shoot unless fired upon is by far the dumbest policy for a peace keeping force. All they can do is watch while the people they were sent to protect get slaughtered. If they were actually allowed to kill the people commiting the atrocities, maybe there would be less genocides.
The big trouble with dumb bastards is that they are too dumb to believe there is such a thing as being smart.

When I was in 2nd grade I sang "You're a Grand Ole Flag" in a talent show. I still remember the words.

You're a grand ole flag
you're a high flyin' flag
and forever in peace may you wave.

You're the emblem of
the land I love
the home of the free and the brave.

Every heart beats true
for the red, white and blue
where there's never a boast or brag

And should all aquaintance be forgot
keep your eyes on the Grand Ole Flag.

I think that's right, it's how I remember it anyway.

Rudd is only slightly better than Howard, and it can't be hard to be better than Howard.

You would die for the country?? Lamest shit I've ever heard
You love everything about this country? Even the inherent racism that this country has? The fact that every 3rd Ute that drives pass has either a 'Australia: FULL' sticker, or a 'Speak English or f*ck Off' sticker?

I certainly love the biggots that this country holds, that's for sure
