Whats the point in speaking welsh?!

i dont understand them trying to bring back a defunct language and trying to be awkward when they already got the most useful language to use and learn, free of charge, its like trying to wear a wooly hat or gloves in a boiling hot area, it dosent work and i know alot of welsh people aint like that like places in S.wales are pretty decent but places in N.wales (especially in the little towns) there so wierd! its unbelievable! i mean i went to a small town in northern wales and there so creepy in 5 minutes everyone knew i was in the town and started giving me funny looks when i was doing nothing wrong, i say just accept english as the main language, like for example ireland has

I disagree that Welsh is a 'defunct' language. It's in common use throughout north and west Wales, and is on the increase in the south. Indeed, the main reason why it is less widely spoken in the south is because of the English governments attempts to kill the language off in the 19th century. Children caught speaking Welsh in schools were punished and adults who couldn't speak English were refused work in the English owned steel & mining industries.

I've been speaking Welsh all my life, and I'm originally from Swansea. In fact it wasn't until I was about 9 or 10 that my English became better than my Welsh. My family are Welsh speaking and so are about a quarter of my friends, so I find it a useful skill which I use daily.

Furthermore, being able to speak Welsh is now an advantage when looking for work. Many companies, including multi-national corporations, provide a bilingual service here.

Another benefit of speaking Welsh is one which is not exclusive to Welsh. The benefit is in being able to speak more than one language. It makes it easier to learn a third, or fourth language, as well as being more mentally agile.

I'd hate for welsh to become extinct. It wouldn't be just the language that would disappear, it woud be a part of the culture.

I'm actually starting to try to teach myself scottish gaelic now, and a friend of mine is trying to learn welsh.

why u live in america welsh aint spoken there theres only one tiny island i know where they speak welsh as there main language
