So, how much do you love Sociology?!

quite a bit...it really hits my interests and tempermant on a variety of levels.

I get to complain about things all the time, without offering any solutions, which suits me very well. I also get to remain detached from sticky details like real life from my comfortable ivory tower, while looking at some interesting phenomona from time to time.

I guess that explains your lack of love for biosociology. You remind me of one of my professors who said that the main problem of cultural relativism (in ethics) is "that it's a conversation stopper." Answers? Yuck!

indeed. Cultural relativism is certainly not without its problems, but i think in a lot of ways it is sure a lot more realistic and civilized than other ways of thinking.

Annoyingly, I've never read a convincing rebuttal of cultural relativism (or ts intellectual cousin, epistemological scepticism).
But they are both bloody difficult ways of living!

i suppose im supposed to say....

meh, just because you havent stumbled across a convincing rebuttal, doesnt make them more "right" than other ways of thinking.

Fair point!
But i was being a ponce- i really meant that logically, I don't think it is possible to rebutt cultural relativsm, and yet in practice no one really believes in it.-because its impossible to live by.

indeed, its a bit of an ideal type and not something your ever really going to see in practice.

For instance i have a neat ancedotal example.

Im doing some research for one of my senior classes on genocide. Now i consider myself to be a pretty relativistic cant catch me off guard open to all different ways of behavior type of guy.

When i was reading about the rwandan genocide in 1994 i was amazed at some of the cultural elements at play and even for my pretty open minded self a little disgusted at some of the rationale behind their logic of torture and all that.

Since kids come around here, i suppose ill leave what exactly all that was out, but i caught myself surprised at being surprised.

"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill."

Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

Nah, just curious to know your reaction. Though being only alarmed is a bit disturbing.

On to the next question. How do you feel about having your eyes poked out, castrated, limbless, tongoue cut out, and forced to live paralyzed from the neck down?

Did you, perchance, hear a song which was popular in the UK perhaps a year ago named JCB Song, and is it about you?

i was going to say oddly aroused, until i saw that i was going to be castrated....i supposed id range it between certainly alarmed and nihilistic cause i dont think much matters at that point....

to guiscard...

actually i did not which i suppose is surprising since i hung out with a bunch of uk folk all summer long, but i suppose i wouldnt have known about it had i come across it. I will assume for now, its not about me.

If you were buried in a pit, would you rather have starving lions or zombies in it with you?
