UK going to the moon, too late?!

Postby brooksieb on Sat Feb 16, 2008 2:06 pm

god aint it about time, after all these year we're thinking about going on the moon(that will have to be 10 yrs later anyway), aint that a big achievement! what's the point?! it's already been done before!, why dont we think about going to mars instead, or help make a joint co-operation with some-one like america to go to mars, i just think its a waste of money and we can do oother things with it, like upgrading our army what do you lot think?

people that dont come from the uk can definately vote too but this is about the uk

and i think we shud upgrade our army our guns jam alot we dont have the proper kit just sort that out!

A bit late on the uptake I should say.

We did it in 1969, I think Russia did it later on, and all this during the Cold War.

in theory if you want to believe involved in long term space programs, someone...or a group of someones has to be involved in setting up a sending off colony on the moon. Mars is quite a bit easier to pull off if you have a reasonable base set up from the moon to begin with.

Going to Mars now is foolish. It would take forever to get there, cost far too much money and would be extremely dangerous. Just go to the moon. You don't say "I'm going to be a runner!" one day and then decide to run in the olympics...

rumor has it there are plans in place to get there sometime in the mid 2030s.

Honestly, if we ever decided to stop fighting expensive wars, it probably woudlnt be a bad way to avoid losing a whole lot of contracts and economic piece of the pie that having a continual state of war provides.

Space exploration isnt that cheap. So it can have a bonus effect for the economy if people get working on it.

According to some, the UK has already been to Mars.

in which case i suppose it would make much less sense to go to the moon then.

Exactly! No point in doing any of this crazy zooming around the solar system...best spend your money on tea and cakes and working out a prosperous future for human beings on this planet first. These so-called space programs are nothing more than a diving platform for the military to control space. Whoever controls space, controls the world...BoooHaha!

May I be the first to point out that Russia never actually sent manned craft to the Moon? There's a whole world of difference between unmanned probes and actually sending someone out there.

As for the OP, yes. Hopefully the ESA can replace NASA as the world's primary space exploration agency, since NASA hasn't done anything particularly useful since 1997. It's good to see that someone is interested in establishing a self-sustaining colony before western civilization shoots itself.

it seems to make far more sense to allow a collection of countries try and continue on with a space program, as it really is too much of a financial burden for one nation on its own to take on.

it is embarrising at times how keynesian i can be to be honest. And how ideologically incompatiable that is with everything that i study and talk about at all times.

But it wouldnt be full disclosure if i didnt admit some of my own reactionary failures when i point out other peoples all the time.

I agree! Who monitors the USA? Who monitors China? Space exploration should be a world party! Every government in the world should be allowed into, as soon as they quit fighting each other. The best way to institute peace in the world is to give the world a peaceful goal. A goal that produces pride in their accomplishment that the whole world can be proud of together.

I don't see why the UK would want to go to the moon... it's been done, and even when it was done it was basically just a game of "mine's bigger than yours" between the US and the Soviets... what's the UK trying to prove by doing something that we already did forty years ago?

Mars would be way cool though :)

Why does the US need monitoring? This isn't biological weapons research. I can't think of any part of space exploration that would require monitoring.

I think the UK is planning to get a little practice in manned missions in before it tries anything like Mars.

i dont think people should really see it as why are they going, so much as perhaps is it at the point where we should really consider starting to set up colonies off of earth.

Seemingly like anything else, you probably get a lot more value out of it, once your there for a while and can figure out what exactly you can use whatever is there for.

Personally im all for mulitnational groups getting something up and running.

Space exploration is fucking stupid on a planet that can't even get its shit together here on terra firma

Pretty sure NASA's budget for 6 months could feed the planet for a couple of years
