Can anyone justify this for me?

Postby Neoteny on Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:46 pm

I would like to get drunk tonight. It is a humble goal, I believe. However, because it is Sunday, I cannot purchase any alcohol to take home and consume at my leisure. Why? Why is this? If I had only enough sense to purchase the alcohol on Saturday... but wait. I have rights! I have the right to get drunk whenever I damn well please! f*ck you for telling me I can't buy alcohol on a Sunday! There are ways around this... I just have to drive ten minutes over the state border... Or twenty minutes to the better stocked store on Fort Benning... But I shouldn't have to!

Why the f*ck can't I buy beer on Sunday?! What the f*ck is wrong with you people? Who the f*ck do you think you are? Keep your religion out of my life! Dicks!

Ahem... thank you.

Don't be hasty, Europe's pretty messed up. Although Mexico sounds cool.
Surely some states have more liberal laws?

I remember hearing about this...it's pretty much a throwback to ancient rain men. Embarrassing, frankly.

"We need to try a different approach," said Rocky Twyman, who organized the concert.

At first I thought he was referring to the how idiotic the prayer thing was, but then I realized he was supporting it. He thinks that relying on ourselves and looking to the government isn't working, so instead we should shout/think really hard at the sky until it rains. Wonderful.

yeah its complete bullshit. Im in NY which is a pretty blue state. and we still got the laws. It used to be stores couldn't sell inbetween 2am - 12pm sunday. they recently passed a law that is now 2am-9am i believe. The confusing part is that my city, bars can stay open til 4am so that overlaps the 2am. But then in rochester where i went to college, still in NY state mind you, bars could only stay open til 2am! too many differences. My friend who moved to conneticut said that her saturdays are ruined because bars have to close at midnight because its sunday a holy day. weaksauce. YOU FRIGGIN DRINK WINE AT CHURCH!!!!!!! WHATS THE BIG DEAL. also separation of church and state

seperation of church and state is merely a clause in the constitution to prevent the state from sponsoring a church, so don't try and throw that up there as a defense, plan ahead if you wanna get drunk on sunday that's all

point is we shouldn't have to plan ahead to get drunk on a sunday. Businesses out there want to sell a legal product to a consumer who wants to buy it, why should the government be able to interfere?

stop your bitching and move to Sydney

alcohol can be sold on Sundays & bars can stay open all night

over here individual bars/pubs/clubs decide if the business they might receive justify the expense of being open at those 'ungodly' hours

i hear ya on this man, i used to live in kentucky, and there's no liquor or beer sold on sundays. restaurants can sell, but they have to sell a certain amount of food to prove they aren't bars. bars aren't open on the Lord's day either. also, during the week, liquor stores closed at 11 PM. weak! we had to drive 45 miles round trip to tennessee for beer....it sucked, mainly b/c alcoholics/weedheads don't plan for the future very well.....

north carolina sells on sunday, but all alcohol is sold by state-run stores, and they aren't open on sunday either. wtf!

it's even worse in places where whole counties are dry, sometimes a huge group of counties.....i feel sorry for those people. i'm a christian too, and i respect the history of religion in these conservative rural regions, the blue laws were put in place to foster church attendance......but it's really overboard and outdated. there are places i would love to live one day, but they're in dry counties and that ain't never gone happen!

Move to the UK, binge drink every night if you can afford it or want to, have fights in the street, cause trouble, generally cause havoc.

It is the God given right of every Englishman to get drunk, scrap, and cause trouble.

And is this a new problem?? NO. Stone Age beer jugs have suggested that we were intentionally fermenting alcohol as early as the Neolithic period, 12,000 years ago. Since there is no evidence that we drank it with straws - which the Egyptians did 6,000 years back (well they were somewhat more civilised than us) - that means we probably filtered the wheat husks out with our teeth. We have always been a sophisticated nation when it comes to drink.

By the 16th century, in Coventry, the average amount of beer and ale consumed was 17 pints per person per week.

Jacobean writers described drunkenness among all classes and in 1606 Parliament passed "The Act to Repress the Odious and Loathsome Sin of Drunkenness". This caused riots in the streets, it was repealed a bit smartish!!

The Gin epidemic reached such proportions that by 1690 adverts ran saying: "Drunk for one penny, dead drunk for two," In 1736 Parliament tried passing a law taxing gin and prohibiting its sale in quantities of less than two gallons, yes you read that correctly, 2 gallons!!!! Again there were riots, and production of gin continued to rise.
(no change there then)

So..if you want to drink...England is the best place (and I mean England, Scotland has often brought in various alchohol limits that the English failed to do) just get yourself over here!!

Sometimes between a job and school, one doesn't have time to plan ahead for these things. Other times, I just forget what day it is. It's a retarded law and I shouldn't have to deal with it. What does "merely a clause" mean anyway?

For the happy ending: I ended up going on post and getting beer, and then playing pinochle all night. The strange thing is, once I pass the gate, I can get all the alcohol I want, for teh cheapz. Then I can cross back over and get blitzed. Also gas is cheaper, which is nice.
