Freedom of Speech

Postby KoE_Sirius on Fri Feb 01, 2008 8:15 am

Do you have freedom of speech where you live?
Where I live if you swear/show aggression near a Policeman or get caught on CCTV.You can be locked up...How does it work where you are?

Swearing at a police officer has nothing to do with free-speech. Imagine a country where you would be able to do that, there just wouldn't be any police.

Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

Hopefully this isn't a serious thread, but there is a pretty good sized difference between swearing at a police officer and swearing around a police officer, methinks. Here in America, it probably depends in what state you're in. I'm sure there are several ridiculous laws about swearing in public, I just doubt any are actually enforced...

To me, that last case against Nick Griffen of the BNP proved outright that we have free speech in this country.

I personally feel that in England freedom of speech is relative.

Yes we can say what we please and depending on the mood and temperment of the police officer in question we shouldnt get nicked.

Having said that England is a country that is trying to ban smoking in cars and has banned smoking in public places.

It is a country that dictates how a child should be bought up.

In these respects our freedom is very much taken away. The argument being however that is the public capable of looking after itself without resorting to an anarchical chaos.

Im not sure i was fully decided on my point when i started this post.

But you are categorically allowed to shout at the top of your lungs about the fact that you disagree with those things.

Well actually I have to disagree. The things we're prohibited from saying in the UK are all prohibited because they are: precursors to crime (conspiracy etc), classifiable as serious invasions of an individuals personal space (in the case of common assault), or are incitements to perpetrate criminal behaviour (Racial hatred laws etc).

We really do have freedom of speech, and any curtailments on that are really laws seeking to prevent the perpetration of crime, not reductions of our freedom to express opinions.

All due respect here, but I think I'd like you to explain what you actually mean by that. I think the statement is somewhat sensationalist and misleading at present.

Well your 1st point seems very much based on an idealistic basis.

I love my country and i am not insulting it.

Now onto your arguments.
It is not rare for a person to tell a police officer to "f**k off" and to be arrested. Nor is it rare for one person to be in a bad temper (whatever the reason) and to vent to no-one in particular and be cautioned by an equally bad tempered police officer.
In my opinion the police are people just as we are. And when things are not working well for them it is not uncommon for someone to do the wrong thing at the wrong time and be nicked by the aforementioned police officer.

In regards to the child issue - Another example. A child is wounded several times in 4 weeks. It does not take long before the social services are round issuing, in worse case scenarios, threats to the parents. Now i think we are all aware that a great deal of young lads and many a young lady likes to climb trees and generally do things with little regard to their own safety. From my own personal experience i was in hospitol 3 times in 2 weeks as a lad and i was taken away for 2 days by social services. I feel that was unfair.

"In these respects our freedom is very much taken away. The argument being however that, is the public capable of looking after itself without resorting to an anarchical chaos."

Perhaps a comma would aid your comprehension of my statement :P

Does that help at all?

As i said, i like my country, i just felt like my opinion was a) a valid one and b) worth speaking to you fine people.

Last year police officers in Croatia finally figured out what ACAB means so they arrested some people.

Well I can say goodbye to that t-shirt.

Swearing near a police officer gets you arrested? Are you sure you don't live in China?

It's not like it doesn't exist, it's just limited to some extent...spamming, trolling, flaming, etc. Pretty good considered it's privately owned.
