I see little difference between the two quotes.

The smilies replace periods, exclamation points, those types of grammar in order to provide a more accurate expression of emotions in a post.

Like, the :P at the end of the post represents how it's only semi-serious, I do it, and it's in a joking manner. And how I thought it was a bit funny.

The shifty eyes is another expression of how I thought it was slightly funny, and sets off my post as generally not a serious post.

As long as smilies aren't placed in the middle of sentences (unless your describing the smilies) then they don't do anything that creates a harder-to-read post.

Really, is that a bad thing? First forum I've ever seen that doesn't like smilies. Aren't they there for a purpose? We aren't video chatting or anything, there needs to be some manner of expressing emotions beyond the normal means of grammar.

It's mostly the overabundance of them. This post is way more readable. You don't have to convey every emotion through a post. Just the major ones.
I mean, >.> is just annoying if you place it after each sentence.
"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill."

Duane: You know what they say about love and war.
Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

The normal means of grammar suit most of us just fine, thank you.

I didn't think any of the other posts were actually any less readable, but meh, guess it could quite possibly just be 2+ years of being used to it :P

And wtf @ hecter? A bit of an over-exaggeration there, I think.

Probably, but I'm being an extremely cynical bastard as of late. I wouldn't take it personally if I were you...

what does my belief in 9/11 (do you even need to know?) have to do with one million smileys?

... no rules against advertising or something like that, is there?... Hope not :P

tbh, this forum is quite tame in many ways for comparison...

I never said smilies should be used all the time ;)

Just they can be quite effective when used in the right spots to convey emotions ^^

Like... putting a period at the end of the sentence above makes it sound dull. Exclamation point makes me sound like a teacher preaching grammar to a first grader, and it isn't a question. Yet leaving it blank doesn't fit, either. So, the eyebrows give it a slight exclamation without the preaching type effect.
