People can appear twice because when they demo the popup and main window gabblies at the same time. They disappear when they close the popup or leave the main window.

I pick Gabbly. RSS Feeds, Muting... what's not to love.

I was going to say the advantages of IRC, but I just looked at the Gabbly API and it's an easy pick.
Plus, IRC loads slower and asks for security stuff.

But Lack... if you are going to do it...

MAKE SURE YOU Set the follwing variables in the url:
nick = (name)
dnc = true

http://www.gabbly.com/gabbly.pbwiki.com/Dev%20Corner

PLEASE!!!

This should help cut down impersonating, it wont eliminate it but it will help.

EDIT: Oops, your one step ahead of me... :wink:

Also, for private chats you can pass a key and append it to the conquerclub url.

Note:
Gabbly is a new, more features will be added in the future.

A nice feature of gabbly is that when you join in you can see previous posts, so if someone called out a realtime game 1 minute ago you would see it. IRC has the time next to each post which is nice while gabbly seems to print out the time once in a while.

I'm surprised that Gabbly is actually two months younger than CC! It will surely evolve, but will probably never have all the features of IRC.

I wonder if us forum dwellers are bigger power-users than the average CC player who spends less time in the forum, and therefore more inclined to prefer IRC? In fact, I wonder what percentage of active players have posted in the forum. I'll find out and edit this post with the answer...

^ I agree... Forum users are probably more likely to know how to use IRC than casual users. You wouldn't want to alienate casual users.

Also, do you really want people to have access to all the irc features in your game window?

And how does one view the chat history?

The only way I can see IRC working ( I still wouldn't like it ) is if there was a custom java applet... that made players join with the nick name-game# and communicated to the bot and the bot communicates with everyone else in that game.

Gabbly. IRC doesn't like my name (space) and IRC doesn't like my firewall.

Why is viewing the chat history needed? If I sign into IRC looking for a RT game, then all I'll need to do is ask if there's any games being planned. I certainly wouldn't want to scroll back through lines looking for a callout, especially with all the crap we were posting last night. :lol:

As was mentioned last night, people may have slight preferences, but will use whatever's available.

FYI, Dex mentioned the aesthetics of IRC could be cleaned up a bit, for those of you who like visually appealling chats.

^ Majority of the players do not play realtime though.

And finding a RT game could be solved by simply putting a gabbly chat on the frontpage or a link to find RT game w/ gabbly chat on the next page.

IRC allows not only the more tech-savvy users like myself more options (I can't stand java applets), but the java applet can be customized by the developers here to be more visually appealing than gabbly. Either way, IRC wins.

Option #3...

php Free Chat

The Mod Squad is a bit concerned over the potential for chat abuse. Since it's possible for outsiders to access either chat, we can't really stomp out spam, vulgarity, or username impersonations from disgruntled convicted multis :o

So I looked into customizable chat programs to host on CC (as opposed to gabbly.com or irc.quakenet.com) and found this candidate. It has medium complexity.

php Free Chat is a free, simple to install, fast, customizable and multi languages chat that uses a simple filesystem for message and nickname storage. It uses AJAX to smoothly refresh (no flicker) and display the chat zone and the nickname zone. It supports multi-rooms (/join), private messages, moderation (/kick, /ban), customized themes based on CSS and plugins systems that allows you to write your own storage routines (ex: Mysql, IRC backends ...), and you own chat commands!

Demo: http://www.phpfreechat.net/demo.en.html (I didn't have time to install it yet)

Your feedback on this is much appreciated 8)

Oh, as for popup vs main window, this will be a setting you can change.

Irc security systems do there job though. If you get that setup unruly people can be booted and no one will be able to run around impersonating each other as we saw happen in gabbly.

Trust me, IRC is the past, present, and future of chat. The others are too slow/gaudy/stupid.
