Michael J. Fox TV Ad

It's a little late for this thread.

But honestly, that's the worst kind of propoganda. He can take his meds and he won't gyrate. He was also jerking around in front of Congress, almost exactly the same way. So Rush had perfect grounds to accuse him of "either forgetting to take his medicine or faking it." I don't get why the media is all like "Shame on you Rush," when the ad in Tennessee formatted in basically the same way, only against a Democrat, was screamed at for racism and brought to court for libel.

I agree totally. Let's not forget he is an actor. There is stem cell research allowed, why can't they use what they have instead of embryos?

I have lost all respect for Hollywood, since 9/11, all they've done is use the celebrity status to sway voters to their political views.

Indeed. The one that pisses me off the most is the Governator.

Yeah... hes a big Austrian guy who was great in action films. The does NOT mean he would be a good governor.

First...did any of you listen to the speech or read the transcript of what he said to congress? Or are you basing your entire opinion on that of Rush Limbaugh?

Second...why is this propaganda? Because he wanted to show what Parkinsons disease really looks like? He stated that he intentionally didnt take his meds for this very reason. Do you know what a parkinsons disease afflicted person looks like when they DO take their meds? They look like Muhhamed Ali. Stone faced...unable to speak. Do some research.

Yeah...take your meds Michael SO WE DONT HAVE TO LOOK AT IT.

Thats BS and Rush is a supreme ass for what he said...especially since HE is a illegal drug abusing pill popper himself.

He's using his disease to advance medical research that is really just "hope of what could be." REAL breakthroughs in adult and umbilical stem cell research have been barely a drop in the bucket, when anything about embryonic stem cell research is front-page news. Rush was just saying the truth. The truth hurts, doesn't it. Plus, he shouldn't use his Parkinson's to advance candidates via the "hollywood vote." It's the liberal drive-by media

Question #1 again...you must have missed it.

Did you listen to the speech or read the transcript of what he said to congress? Or are you basing your entire opinion on that of Rush Limbaugh?

happysadfun wrote:He's using his disease to advance medical research that is really just "hope of what could be."

Exactly. This is the basis for ALL medical fundraising. Is the American Cancer Society or any medical research organization doing a disservice by raising money for "hope of what could be"? Was Christopher Reeves "using his disease (condition) to advance medical research"? Your damn straight he was. Was it a good thing? Ask the researchers and they will say "HELL YES".

happysadfun wrote:REAL breakthroughs in adult and umbilical stem cell research have been barely a drop in the bucket, when anything about embryonic stem cell research is front-page news.

Huh? I dont follow. Are you saying spending money on medical research is a waste of money or something? Please explain.

happysadfun wrote:Rush was just saying the truth. The truth hurts, doesn't it.

Irony meter! I would say that Michael J. Fox showing the true face of Parkinsons disease is the "truth that hurts" or people wouldnt be so horribly offended by a man with a disease that makes him shake.

happysadfun wrote:Plus, he shouldn't use his Parkinson's to advance candidates

And why not? He HAS a disease. IT'S REAL! He (and all others with Parkinsons disease) want candidates who will help fund research. Why does this offend you so?

happysadfun" wrote:It's the liberal drive-by media

Why did you put this in such a tiny font? Are you embarrased to parrot Rush Limbaugh in public? Is Parkinsons Disease now a "Liberal" disease? I didnt realize that it had a political affiliation.

So....

you attack Michael J Fox because:
a) you are a republican and therefore rush can do no wrong
b) you are a bible-thumping stereotype
c) you disagreed with the ad.

And you accuse him of being a hypocrite. oh. my. god.

I have lost all respect for Hollywood since 9/11

I think I have to agree with Backglass here.

Secondly, everyone I know from California has told me that they like Arnold as governor.

Jsut liek that Ronald Reagan guy, jsut becasue he's a big movie star DOES NOT mean he can be a good president. Just becasue he was a big movie star doesn't mean he knows how to balance a budget. I guess he jsut took a bunch of cues from Margaret Thatcher and started racking up a national debt to maek voters happy that they're not paying taxes, but fucking over people like me, who will have to start paying of that debt once they start on their career path.

I agree, jsut becasue Arnold Schwarzenegger was a movie start does not mean he's a good politican, just like how John McCain's veteran status doesn't make him a great senator.

Its not your previous job, regardless of what it is, that dictates how well you well do as a politcian. Since Arnold got reelected he must be doing something right, and california isn't in any grave fiscal or social crisis so i'm sure governor Schwarzenegger is doing as good of a job as any other governor.

Micheal J. Fox ruls.
Its a brave thing that he did in front of congress.
You might not like him to play the pity card, but what he is saying is that its important to do research for people just like him. Without research there will never be a cure(for anything). thats a fact. And he brought it to you in your face, now what are YOU going to do about it!

They are already doing research in adult and umbilical stem cell research, the kind that doesn't kill a human embryo. It has had actual breakthroughs. However, embryonic stem cell research is currently only hope of what could be, not a for-sure proven fact.

::emits strangled cry::

a) read the replies, especially re your "hope for what could be" rubbish:
backglass wrote:This is the basis for ALL medical fundraising. Is the American Cancer Society or any medical research organization doing a disservice by raising money for "hope of what could be"?

b) Stop moralising based on your religious beliefs. If you don't want to put stem cell-derived cures into your body that's fine. But that's got nothing to do with the rest of us.

I'm saying that there's other ways than killing a human embryo. Such as umbilical and adult stem cells. And there is no proof that embryonic stem cells are better, at all.

"yeah, them pinko commie bastards are murdering babies just for fun. least that's what rush says..."

So to summarise:
Michael J Fox is evil because he showed us what parkinsons is like, and furthermore it's fine for rush limbaugh to accuse him of acting his symptoms because that's how to quell the doubt and emotion you experienced on watching a very sick man asking for your help.

They have done enough reserach to see that these types of stem cells are less effective, and much harder to develop than embryonic stem cells. Besides, if the reaserach isnt' done here then it will be done in places liek Singapore, which has poured a LOT of money into stem cell research.

Your statement is the equivalent of saying, we don't need cars that emit greenhouse gases when we have perfectly good bicycles!

I never called him evil

He accused him of either acting or not taking his meds, and the answer is probably that he didn't take his meds

It's sadly being done quite a bit here in Wisconsin, using taxpayer money, and most taxpayers don't even support it. They HAVE NOT proven that embryonic stem cells are more effective, it's JUST A THEORY. And the fact is that they HAVE PROVEN that adult and umbilical stem cells DO WORK and don't involve killing off human embryos. So, what do you have against it? Why do you want to kill off human life to accomplish this when you could use nonfatal methods? Sure, it could be a bit harder, but a human life is worth a little extra effort. You view is equivalent of Marx and Hitler, basically thinking of humans as all the same, little machines, rather than seeing them for the individuals that they really are.

But eventually the world will be happier: you liberals will devote all your fetuses to stem cell research or abort yourselves out of existence.

I agree with you on this topic heavycola...(then again I normally do.)
Hes not gonna go faking his symptoms.. only a retarded idiot does that! Besides how can you fake parkinsons? is it even truely possible? Jeez.. and they wonder why people get upset about these isses!! Its just plain common sence that the man truely has it!!

I think stem cells should be allowed as medical evidence.. I dont care where you get them from as long as the scientist have accsess to them! I did a research paper on them once and the stem cells I studied were inside a babys tooth that was put in a glass of milk by a scientist because his son lost a tooth.. Why cant people send scientist their kids baby teeth so we can abstact the little cells and then the scientist can send the teeth back so parents can still keep the babys teeth damnit!

Actually the point is this, it's BECAUSE he was an actor that he had access to people and is able to get the message out. And people recognize his face when they see it on the tv and will pay attention to the add instead of switching the channel. You know you do it when the nameless 3rd world kid gets put on those adds asking for 10 cents a day. Thank you Stephen Colbert!
