Many reasons, none of which are represented above.

1) Christianity has been around for 2000 years (Well, technically it's been around for 1940 years...) and in all this time it still holds to the morality of the olden days. Hence it's a great target for jokes.

2) Hypocrisy. Greed is a sin, yet a lot of Christians (especially the ones on TV) are rich and keep asking for money. Pride is a sin, yet you proudly wear crosses and proudly declare your relationship with God gives you a better destiny. Wrath is a sin, yet non-believers feel the stingy wrath of God whenever they have the audacity to challenge Him simply because they have doubts. A skeptic can believe, but the instant a believer says "Wait a minute" they're no longer a believer according to doctrine.

3) Humor is the tool of the marginalized, and a lot of people come from Christian backgrounds so they mock what they are most familiar with. Take time, you'll hear these same people mock every other religion on the planet from time to time.

4) Christianity is the most popularized religion out there, and is such very visible. It's easier to mock currently popular things than it is to mock things that went out of style.

5) Oh, and a lot of Christians are just asking for it. ^_^

And you harp on about Christians being persecuted. What about the salem witch trials, the inquisition, events where Christians took it upon themselves to judge, torture, and kill others because they were different. Were these things that you're proud of?

Christianity branched off of Judaism in 66AD after the schism where those that believed that Jesus was the messiah splintered off and formed Christianity.

And point 2 comes from the general hypocrisy that i've observed in Christianity.

Like for example the fact that Christian organizations will spend tens of thousands of dollars to film a commercial about starving kids, when they could take the money for making the commercial and feed some themselves.

Who is "picking on" christians?

I don't know. The last time I can think of Christians being persecuted was Pre-Constantine Roman Empire.

Its not so much being "picked on" as attacked. In the US it seems like as Christianity gets attacked...10 Commandments, "One Nation Under God", "Merry Christmas" and so on. Other faiths seem to be getting more protection or "rights" if you will. I bet it would be more accepted if a Christian child was told he can't read the Bible in school then if a muslim child was told He could not read his Koran. Society as a whole goes out of there way not to offend muslims while Christianity must adhear to the bannishment of our beliefs from any public forum.

The reason is easy. Although not understood by non-Christians. We have the way. The only way to God. Jesus said HE is the WAY. The enemies of God (Satan/demons) therefore attack the church (the people not building). We must be reminded that, "this is a war not of flesh and bone, but spirit and pricipalities" (paraphrased).

Attacked? Oh please.

jay_a2j wrote:10 Commandments

Nobody want to take away your commandments from your churches.

jay_a2j wrote:"One Nation Under God"

Not in the original pledge and added later due to threats of communism.

jay_a2j wrote:"Merry Christmas"

Nobody is advocating banishing Christmas.

jay_a2j wrote:Other faiths seem to be getting more protection or "rights" if you will.

I dont think so. Please state an example.

I will bet your wrong.

Posturing. Please state an example.

Then why do you care? Go to your church, and do whatever you like. Nobody is trying to stop you.

This nation is primarily christians, a Christian gets called out more for abusing the rights to religion more because there are just that many more that are Christian.

Secondly, I don't know where you got the idea of no bibles in school, but here we can bring whatever religious books we want, we just can't tread on someone's right to be jewish or muslim by trying to force them to become christians or vise versa.

Next, the 10 commandments do not deserve to be put in front of a government building or any public building for that matter. Keep them in front of churches and religiously-based schools but they should not be in front of anything else.

also when christians do get made fun of it is because it is based on a book of so called "miracles". every teacher i have ever has says don't use wikipedia as a source of true information because anyone can go on it and write random stuff. the same with old books like the bible. it could have been made up by 1 very good writer as a joke and called "sacred text" by some guys who like too feel importent about themseves. also on the topic of being made fun of. the most made fun of branch of christianity is the catholic church. It is totally racist and sexist. and has so called "holy men" who have a certain affinity for raping young boys. and that is why we " unbelievers" make fun of christians.

Or history of Indians, Native Austalians etc. Anyhow, I don't pick on Christians (the people who read Christs words in the Bible (or from any other source), who found wisdom in them and decided to listen to his advice).
BUT, I do like to pick on (for the lack of better word) Churchgoers. By that word I mean the followers of organized religions which quote (and misquote) Jesus to atract followers. Basicly there are 2 reasons why I like making fun of them:

1. Because I find them spiritually lazy and/or spiritualy primitve. I threet them pretty much the in the same way they threet the members of the religions that they find primitive

2. Because, some of them are either activly promoting or passivly alowing the idea that all people, no mather their belifs, should follow the moral path set by the Christianity (as they see it). I find it pompous and I feel warm and fuzzy inside :D any time I make a pompous person cry (in rage or sorrow). It's a hobby.

3. Because I like making fun of ALL people. I don't belive that there are "holly cows" of witch fun shouldn't be made. Myself included

Not exactly true. In France, for example, people are forbided to wear ANY religius symbols inschools, or from having religius symbols in workplaces. Although I am not a religius person I think that it is a violation of human rights

Be that as it may, much of the morality of the olden days is far better than what we call "civilized" today. Not all older "morals" are good, but I think the morals retained by the Church today are the best of the lot, and better than many of the things they have been replaced by.

This DOES strike the nail right on the head. Many people (TV evangelists, etc) do use Christianity as a platform for money. What's more, many Christians are the most materialistic people you have ever seen. People DO tend to scream "I'M CHRISTIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" in the clothing and jewelery they wear, and show off their knowledge of the Bible. It just so happens that said people are the type who annoy the heck out of me at school. But you are making vast, sweeping generalizations here. Perhaps the reason you label all Christians like this is because these ones are the loudest of the bunch. The minority is always heard best, a teacher of mine once said.

vtmarick wrote:4) Christianity is the most popularized religion out there, and is such very visible. It's easier to mock currently popular things than it is to mock things that went out of style.

fair enough.

Proud of it? Of course not. Acts of evil, no doubt about it. But those issues are more ancient even than slavery. Is it the fault of the modern Church that such things happened several hundred years ago? I daresay not, just as it's not the fault of modern southerners that their ancestors enslaved African Americans.

Well when you make fun of any group its naturally a generalization. I dont' doubt that there are a lot of christians who are very pious and don't participate in the hypocrisies mentioned before, however many of the christians who are crying out that their rights are being opressed, or at least have started encouraging people to cry out, are the ones who make the most money off of christianity by exploiting it for their personal gains.

This is why even as a Roman Catholic, I can't stand some Christians. No matter what it is that people chose to worship (or not) if they live a good live according to ethical values and morals their life will be worth whatever good the afterlife has to offer. There is no reason that only Christians would go to heaven, especially since God became a loving god.
