Advice: tips on good digital camera?

I wonder if anyone here has experience or advice on what is a good digital camera to get. In poking around online, I see they also now have camcorders that record right to a DVD. Anyone had good / bad experience with them?

Thanks -GD

Wait...you said camera, then talked about camcorders. Which are you looking for?

If it's a camera you are after, I recently purchased this camera for my wifes birthday in May. I am extremely impressed with it thus far.

Nikon Coolpix S210 - $159 at Circuit City

It's 8 megapixels. From what I have read, unless you are having prints blown up huge, etc, anything over 5 is pretty much imperceptible. And the price can't be beat for the quality.

If you need zoom on your camera, go for optical zoom, not digital.

It depends really on what you want to do with it. Digital SLRs give you complete control over shutter speed, aperture, white balance... and they shoot in RAW format (if you choose - they will do JPEG and/or TIFF too), which is completely lossless, giving you all possible control and detail in photoshop. You can use different lenses, proper flash...
But they are a pain in the arse at things like parties or gigs. If you're after an SLR i'd be happy to help, but portable - I don;t really have a clue, except to say: lens quality is more important than the number of megapixels, where portables are concerned. Everty time. And I'm a diehard Nikon user and recommend them wholeheartedly :)

Yeah it depends on whether you want quality or portability, or something inbetween, like a point-and-click. I have a point-and-click, however I would recommend one of the extremes instead, as my camera can neither produce high-quality photos nor make me look cool at a party.

I got this camera for Christmas, It has a lot of different functions, including a Digital Image Stabilzer, so if it's on that setting, pictures won't be blurry, this camera is (obviously) an Olympus FE-210, and is 7.1 megapixels.

we've had really good luck with Olympus you can get splash resistant so rain doesn't harm them.

My cousins had a waterproof camera, that was fun we took videos in the pool.
