And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda

And now time for some more mindless drivel in the form of a favorite song of mine I just listened to.

And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is an amazing song, especially when done by the Three Irish Tenors. Anyone heard of it? Nice little ballad about Australia and the Battle of Gallipoli.

*Waits for thread to turn to the topic of anti-war*

I know the song Waltzing Matilda (but every Australian would) - but not sure about 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda'

Either way, the original Waltzing Matilda is about a bushranger stealing sheep and then being chased by police so he jumps in the river and drowns so he doesn't get caught. I guess that fits in nicely with Australia's early heritage

It's a very good song, one of my favorites as well.

My all time favorite is The Fields Of Athenrye:

It's more of a Irish Rebel song than a war ballad though...

Oh! Another good one!

Listen to music and read lyrics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvTv-I2Y390

Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

Through sixty-six and seven they fought the Congo war
With their fingers on their triggers, knee-deep in gore
For days and nights they battled the Bantu to their knees
They killed to earn their living and to help out the Congolese

Roland the Thompson gunner...

His comrades fought beside him - Van Owen and the rest
But of all the Thompson gunners, Roland was the best
So the CIA decided they wanted Roland dead
That son-of-a-bitch Van Owen blew off Roland's head

Roland the headless Thompson gunner
Norway's bravest son
Time, time, time
For another peaceful war
But time stands still for Roland
'Til he evens up the score
They can still see his headless body stalking through the night
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun

Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun - he didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg

Roland the headless Thompson gunner...
The eternal Thompson gunner
still wandering through the night
Now it's ten years later but he still keeps up the fight
In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine and Berkeley
Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland's Thompson gun and bought it

I don't know what the last few lyrics mean, does anyone know?

I've had many a debate with Norse and the Irish. He keeps saying his best friend is Irish but he hates the Irish...just doesn't make any sense to me. Can't you all just get along?

And if Norse sees this, what is he going to do? He's banned...

What did this NORSE guy do? Is he Norwegian?

Why hate the Irish of all people? What have they ever won? :( ---->not an insult in any way.

anyway it's not all Irish, it's just all them who support the terrorists Republican organizations. now there is peace in Ulster/Northern Ireland, it does not need all you Wanks/Yanks binging all that shit up.

I don't think we brought it up, it was brought up by you... ;)

I just posted a song of tragedy that I liked, it just happens to be an Irish song. And are the IRA still bombing people? There's peace there now, right? You have to admit The Fields of Athenrye is a good song though. The Irish are good with music and prose.

Well, it has a tad bit of rebellion in it, the fury part I don't know about as the man is locked up in prison and his girl is crying in the Harbor. The words are awesome, and the Brits are awesome for providing the emotional fervor for such a song to be written! Without the Brits, the world would just be a boring stagnant place with no heart and no upper lips to stiffen.

i did not bring it up. you brought it up by saying a terrorist song is good, f*ck suggs and his version of the song. he lives in London and that's been bombed like Manchester, so he should be as pissed of as any other Brit would be.
