Turns out that the Swiss want to destroy the world!

And they seemed like such nice people.

A collider dooming the world? Let's ignore Iran for a sec.....

"The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August.

But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?'

That doesn't sound good......

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think we have enough mass nearby to create a black hole.

if those "critics" knew anything at all about what that machine and what it can really do, they wouldn't be afraid. just uninformed paranoia of the unknown

Perhaps you don't need mass nearby.

Well, in that case, we're probably fucked. Who's joining in my August orgy?

Why wait?

Who knew that Switzerland was nothing but Dr. Evils?

Physicist Martin Rees, left, receiving an award in 2005, estimates the chance of the particle smasher creating a global catastrophe at one in 50 million, about the same odds as winning some lotteries.

So we will take the same chance as we have at winning the lottery that we will engulf our world into nothingness with the flip of a switch? It will probably take less than a second for the world to be engulfed in the black hole, meaning we won't have any time to save ourselves once we f*ck up.

I feel ill. Damn Swiss. If they didn't make such good chocolate.... 1 in 50 mil is too close for my comfort....

you have a far better chance of killing yourself just by getting into a car, yet billions of people drive every day.

Perhaps you don't need mass nearby.

yes, yes you do. A black hole does not exist without an unimaginable amount of mass very densely packed in the same region of spce.

Seriously; if you don't at the very least know what quarks and leptons are, then you shouldn't even begin to think about the cost/benifit analysis of this. If you can name them all twelve (so far?) off the top of your head, then you're a little bit better off. And if you're far beyond that (I wouldn't have a clue what that entails), then you're at the point where you're qualified to discuss whether this is dangerous or not.

Face it: Not one of us have anywhere near the knowledge requisite to have the slightest clue what it is they're actually doing. Yet somehow you've all decided that it's too much of a risk? Go back to discussing whether gay people choose to feel attraction or not.

Don't act retarded. They already dumbed it down for us. If they didn't want us to call it too much of a risk they should have kept things all sciencey and stuff like that....

People win the lottery all the time. Only this time, it's the Deathottery....

Has DaGip predicted something happening in August? If he hasn't I don't think anything will happen at all.

Yes, but that is because you can easily take 50 million people to play a lottery. It's not like we're suddenly going to do this 50 million times in a row.

SILENCE!!!!1

A less of this sense-talking and sane logical rebutall of wild-eyed fear-mongering!! This is clearly another good opportunity to bang on about stupid irrelevant bits of old-books, and to gnash our teeth in fury while ranting about shadowy cartels of people who don't even exist!!!

The Large Heptathalon collider is obviously the end of the universe as we know it! And only we informed forum-users and conspiracy-believers have figured it out! All those clever chappies at CERN are definately evil maniacs who want nothing other than to destroy the world for no financial or personal gain!!!

There is no hope!"!! Only RON PAUL can save us now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Cern is one of the great modern wonders of the world (in my opinion, and in anyone's who thinks that discovering more about our planet/the universe is useful/interesting).
Typical of the conspiricacy idiots to point the finger at one of the few good things going on in the world atm.

AOL news dumbed it down for you, but they have to, because they don't understand this stuff any better. Do you think they have an advanced physicist working for AOL news?

IIRC there were people who were deathly afraid of breaking the sound barrier.

Last time I checked we are still alive.

Besides Hawking radiation will save us. Small micro black holes should quickly decay and go "POP."

That was just the Lizardmen's evil ploy to lull you to sleep so that they could take over the world while you wer snoozing Firth.

Wake up!!! How can't you see that this pure and unmitigated evil is happening right in front of our eyes?? One minute it's black-holes blowing up the whole wide world (even though that will leave the NWO with nothing to conquer) the next minute it'll be RFID Chips in your eyeballs and Ameros for breakfast!!!!!11ONE!!!!

When the first nuke was tested, didnt the scientists give it a 1% chance of igniting the atmosphere?

I don't know if a deathottery is a joking matter....... Nukes aren't either!

And where did the conspiracy nuts come in? I thought these were scientists?
