New Election program? Why do people vote the way they do?

Anybody remember that election program I wrote a few months ago? The one based on two politicians' political compasses, and a random number of voters' compasses?

Here's the thread if you don't remember or weren't around back then.

Anyway, I want to write a more sophisticated version of that. I want to take in various other factors -- say, personality, charm, etc. And here's where the point of this thread arises: what makes a voter vote for a politician? How much of it is policy, how much of it is personality, how much of it is identification? What other factors are there?

In fact, even without the practical purpose behind this thread, this should make interesting discussion.

In most electoral contests where there are two major candidates, the taller wins.

I usually vote for whoever has the most campaign commercials during the shows I watch.

That was actually rather helpful.
