The Internet

We all keep hearing about globalization and the Internet... well, I have a question for you.

Do you think the Internet helps bridge gaps? Does it bring people of the world closer at all? Or do you think it just raises tempers and does the opposite?

I personally think the former is true. But sometimes I doubt myself -- people do seem to lose all their manners and get riled up 'round here...

Some people also only use it to piss off other people...

Well I think we're all well aware that the internet is serious business, so it's only natural that people's tempers are going to get a little raised. But ultimately it let's us thrash out our serious businesses as a collective (where we can share links and passwords etc), rather than as individuals at home (doing it into socks with our own private collection of photos we took of that girl next door without her knowing, and other such), so in that respect it does bring us closer together and bridges all manner of gaps.

Conclusion: It's better to get all raised temperature over serious business with like minded people, than on your own with an illicit picture collection.

Second Conclusion: The Internet is Serious Business.

I didn't understand the "tldr anyway that im not" part... but do it; that's why I made the thread. The Internet is a fascinating "place"; if you ask me, it's an unstoppable force that is ultimately for the good... but maybe that's just the optimist in me.

Both.

Though sometimes I wonder if being close is neccesarily better.

Is it the opposite though? No matter how pissed off I may get with any poster on this forum, as long as we remain in the civilised realms of Chatteryness I can at least - if not respect, certainly acknowledge - other peoples views and the diverse range they represent. Thus, without the internet, I would probably not know that there are loonies like jay yelling about the new world order and calling us sheeple, and think such nuttiness only went for the rip off merchants that pass for firebrand preachers in the bible belt. (no offence to the NWO believer crowd)

Given that, even if I don't agree (or vehemently disagree), that I can read arguments presented in a fairly clear and respectable fashion on a neutral medium (dar intarwebz) does, I think, bring the people closer together, and in most - if not all - cases, even the most heated debate will never really be enough to drive them apart again, they'll always hold some ackowledgement of toehr people's existing worldviews.

There is way too much punctuation in the above diatribe.

Of course it brings people together who otherwise would never do so. In some ways it's probably good because you're exposed to people who don't share your values and you're forced to defend them - and vice versa. What bothers me here on Conquer Club is that a majority of people of the left-leaning persuasion behave as if this is their private playground. But of course, that's probably because I'm from the right-leaning side of things and also because I don't have enough time to stay here and discuss as much as others.

Which bings me to another point, it seems that leftists post in here far more than their opponents. How do they have all this free time? Could it be that right-wingers are actually out doing something with their lives other than argue? Sorry, I couldn't help but stir up the pot.

just a guess....the insults thrown by the right often arent as hard on the left as the opposite.

No one likes to be called a racist or a bigot, but lefties probably arent going to mind being called elitist or a tree hugger.

It seems to me that people of "right winged persuasion" are always whining about being abused on the Internet. Get over it

But that's for another thread.

I think it bridges gaps more. Espeically with how I live my live. I was able to meet a lot more people on the internet that'd I'd consider friends than in real life. It's quite an amazing thing what it is. I think that mainly it is for the good and not for the bad. I don't really get anymore riled up on the net than I do in real life. I treat the both the same. Stuff I do here I'd do in real life, and likewise.

@ Exile, if that is true then why am I on your foe list?

Both.

But the worst thing it does is blurr information. You can pick any opinion on just about any subject and there will be a site dedicated to it .... somewhere. Probably a few. BUT, there is no longer a ready sense of truth vs untruth. Look at these forums. You have a site of someone claiming (?maybe spurious, perhaps real) that no one went to the moon, that it was all a big hoax. You have folks who will pick any definition they like out of wikkipeadia without any regard for any more traditional reference (and they often disagree). AND, worst of all, so many young adults today just don't understand why it matters.

It IS possible to find good information on the net. BUT, you have to apply the same basic standards that have always existed for print media. Namely, you have to find credible sources. For science studies, that means peer-review journals. Etc.
