Stumbled across this story and thought it was probably worth sharing, because i doubt its the type of thing anyone would ever think about unless they were personally tied into the situation. Personally they probably should do something, though id admit im not the first to know exactly how it would take shape. Dollar is taking a beating as it is, if you got completely new styles of bills in circulation, you might wonder if anyone would even notice...

Getting Blind Friendly markings on our bills is something that is way overdue. Normally I am not a fan of court activism but we need to get the ball rolling on this one. We are already revamping our currency in small ways, adding blind friendly features only makes sense.

And just adds one more anti-counterfeiting safeguard.

I hate blind people and the way they never look at you when you're talking to them. It's just rude. I rip them off whenever i can. Why should the US taxpayer fork out for this bleeding heart nonsense when there are still people out there who haven't had a tax cut? Makes me sick.

Euro bills are all different sizes. So I guess we're way ahead of the USA there.

I heard this on NPR today. It was one of those "holy crap I hadn't thought of that" moments. It would be nice to see, no negativity intended.

Canada too (colour, not size), but I don't see how that would help the blind.

Well, the Canadians already have to worry about the Québécois or whatever they call themselves, so they have an excuse for being behind, eh? Now Americans on the other hand purposely elected a mutated monkey as president, so everything is the Federal Government's fault. Blame our illiterate leader (yay bashing Bush with no point or premise!!!) Wait, that doesn't make sense!!

But yeah, I'm all for putting Braille or something to that effect on our currency, but then what happens if a bill goes through the wash or something? I think that, although having one size looks nice, making bigger or smaller bills is the way for us to go. Thanks for posting this, cuz you're right I wouldn't have noticed this.

But you are dead right, Light Tango, - plus, quite often they attack me with their mini ( and seeminingly, never charged) lightsabers. Damn their impudence.

I actually read some years ago that blind people could tell the difference between bills - something to do with the way they tend to feel after other people had handled them - (a fifty is treated more carefully than a five, etc). It didn't make much sense to me at the time, but as I was living in the UK (where of course the notes were different sizes and colours*) I couldn't ask anyone. I've not met any blind people in the US yet.

*many people officially "blind" can still just about make out some colour. Apparently yellow is the last to go, which is why gardens for the blind tend to have a lot of yellow flowers in. Don't ask where I got that factlet from, it was just floating around in my head. Any experts out there to confirm/deny?

That's not true for most of the blind people I know of. The ones I know of tend to alway look in my general direction when I speak to them. People with "lazy" eye can make me feel uncomfortable because while they are pointing their heads at you their eye is looking .... over there.
