Anyone know anything about .cab files?

I'm trying to install C&C Generals Zero Hour on my comp but am having an issue with a corrupted .cab file. I don't want to use a torrent, because they make me feel dirty, so I'd like some help with this, if anyone has any ideas. The interblag has been pretty useless as far as this goes. I'll go into more specifics if there is anyone who thinks they can help me.

Speaking of torrents, I need to learn what those exactly are, and how to use them. Nobody has given me a very precise answer...

You are useless! They are programs that download files to your computer with pretty good speed because it pulls the data from multiple places (ie other cpus) if my understanding is correct. They can also be a bit shady, sometimes...

I am indeed useless!

So BitTorrent for example -- is that what one would call a torrent? I downloaded it, and I don't understand how to use it at all...

That is one of the more popular programs. I have no idea how to use it either, but if I have to resort to it, I'll let you know what I figure out. I'm tired of compressing fucking .cabs...

Hehe. Don't you hate it when you ask for help, and end up having to give help instead? Especially when you end up not being incredibly helpful.

I don't know what made me say that...

An eye for an eye, friend. Computers are the enemy anyhow.

I know quite a lot about .cab files, but it's all a secret.

.cab files are compressed files containing many little files...very similar to a .zip or a .rar. Are you trying to install a game from a CD/DVD? If so, what the error actually means is the disc is unreadable or was written improperly. I'd put million to 1 odds it's unreadable by your system....make sure it's clean, free of glue and scratches etc. Try a different CD/DVD drive. Change from UDMA mode to PIO mode or vice-versa.(haha)

I've decided it was the disc, it has a couple of issues. The thing is, I can extract the files, no problem. So I tried compressing my own .cab, but was running into some completely different problems there. I'll probably just end up using the torrent. Thanks anyway.
