ANZAC DAY 2008 Lest We Forget

Postby deliaselene on Thu Apr 24, 2008 7:09 pm

They shall grow not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and, in the morning,
We will remember them....

I thought that only a couple of months ago Doctors decided it didn't work?

Fucking pharmaceutical companies... I can't believe they managed to invent a day to celebrate this product. Capitalism gone mad I tell you.

I will excuse your ignorance Dapper..

The attack on Gallipoli was one of the more imaginative strategies of the First World War.

The German army had delivered a crushing blow to Russia at Tannenberg at the start of the war and had been driving eastwards. The Russians were threatened by a Turkish advance through the Caucasus and appealed to their allies for assistance. Gaining control of the Dardanelles would re-establish communications with Russia and release wheat and shipping locked in the Black Sea by Turkey.

Besides this, British strategists had for many years before the war believed that the best defence of Egypt and the Suez Canal was an attack on Turkey.

The British Royal Navy could have gone a long way towards achieving these goals by steaming through the Dardanelles straits in November 1914 and shelling Constantinople (now Istanbul) and perhaps putting the government to flight. Instead, they cautiously tested the range of the Turkish guns by bombarding the shore batteries.

The Turkish commanders immediately became aware of their vulnerability to further attacks and strengthened their defences to include carefully laid minefields, well-sited guns and searchlights that swept the narrows at night.

Three months later, a British and French fleet that included 18 battleships, attempted to force its way through to Constantinople. Three capital ships were lost and three crippled.

Unknown to the Allies, the Turkish gun batteries had almost exhausted their ammunition supplies in this effort, and the fleet could have sailed on through the straits with little further damage. Instead, the naval commanders came to the conclusion that they could not force their way through the Dardanelles unless troops were first sent to occupy the Gallipoli Peninsula in force to silence the Turkish guns. Planning for the landing of troops on Gallipoli commenced.

the sun rising at Mount Macedon is a powerful sight Lord V...I did attend a service with my son however...

the attendance today was the largest on record ...since Australian troops have been more actively involved in world conflict, the numbers attending have steadily increased...not necessarily a bad thing by any means...awareness

however what message are we sending our children?

I think you miss the point...and certainly in retrospect it appears there were mistakes made...but where would Australia be today without England...

Lest we forget, eh??

Sounds like a good idea - too bad it clearly seems that everyone forgets way too easily, why else would we (as in our elective government) continue to send troops to war.. especially unjust ones that serve no purpose but to inflate the wallets of already rich men and women.

ANZAC day is a joke when the whole point of the day is missed -

Nationalism and patriotism sucks... service men & women are chumps

That's about it

I don't agreed with National Service either...however Nationalism is something very different.. its the essence behind many wars and can not be ignored...you can not dismiss it as "crap"...

not just australia but the entire world would be a much different, possible crueller, poorer world without the brits. but the gallipoli event was an overwhelming failure despite the bravery displayed by all troops there.

many of the british commanders sent their troops into battle with no regard to the loses. we were expendable.

in WW2 we were led by our own and the difference was noticeable. we sent 250,000 troops to the western front, 5% of the total allied forces committed. yet we captured 25% of the enemy territory, prisoners & armaments.

New Zealand was in ANZAC and we lost thousands which for a country of like 3 million people back then is huge numbers. It was still a horrible tragedy for both nations. Lest we forget.
I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.

iHelen Clark gave a speech, it might have been last year, about just how great a lose it was. i think she may have used the words 'almost an entire generation lost/killed'.

was your army all volunteers ?

Would be nice if we can say "Our army is all volunteers" but I don't think that was the case, you could decide if you wished to be in Air Force, Navy or Army though.

Huge? I submit that you leave out any sort of detail to this self proclaimed description of the girth and length of your love muscle. Huge is relative sir. A 2x4 is huge when compared to a toothpick, after all and yet, really small when compared to an oak tree. Likewise, you may have a huge penis when "hanging out" with pygmies, but lets admit it, you tend to be a loner in the locker room after gym class, for fear that your acorn will become the topic of ridicule.
