not even the Dalai Lama says that Tibet should be independent. They however should be allowed to keep their culture and not have it systematically destroyed by the Han Chinese, who have essentially been bussed into Tibet to dilute the power and presence of native Tibetans. This accompanied with the fact that Chinese leaders view Tibetan culture as a threat to stability creates a problem. They see everything as subversion and rebellion even if they just like the people in other provinces are really just wanting more self-rule/democracy not necessarily independence.

I can't vote, I can't decide whether to go with the third or the sixth option. On the one hand, China did invade an other sovereign nation and is systematically attempting to destroy the culture of the people who previously lived there, on the other hand I want Norse back on these forums.

Actually I think we should pay at least a nominal sum; otherwise we're just ripping someone off.

I agree.

Tianniman(sp?) Square should be reason enough. If not, my moral beliefs and my philosophical beliefs about the nature of government guided me to this conclusion.

Tibet is not the rightful property of the Hans and they should be driven out. India is right next door, just given them one good reason to take those border disputes to the nest level.

Technically it's 29-7 in the Tibet/Norse battle. Tibet just has split supporters.

Gip... it was India that fucked with YouTube... not China.

I voted no.

It's none of our business... aren't we mired deep enough in the Middle East to go start messing around with Asia. Aside from the fact that China is a nuclear power with a population of 1.2 Billion.

As an aside... I work with Chinese and Tiawanese people. Most chinese people consider Tibet to belong to China... i.e. in prior times Tibet was part of China... then it was seperate... then part again... then seperate. How far back do you go to decide if it was part of China or not???

... Yeah, most of the ancient world was once part of China. Maybe they'll go for Eastern Europe next, as it once belonged to them.

... Sent a news link about the riots to a relative in China... he couldn't open it.

You know that time where most of the western world decided that invading countries and claiming them as your own was bad? That guy with that little moustache?

Yeah, China decided that conquering wasn't that bad at all.

Um... Europe was never owned by China... the Mongols did invade and got into Western Europe. The Mongols however were NOT Chinese... they didn't consider themselves Chinese and the Chinese people would never consider them to be Chinese.

Tibet is quite different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibet

In 1751 China set-up the Dalai Lama to rule Tibet... essentially as a Territory or Govenor-type relationship. China had domain over Tibet from the mid 1700's until England in the early 1900's.

Tibet was then essentially "free" from China (but lorded-over by England) till Mao came to power in China and took it back.

You don't have to go back that far for some people to legitimately view Tibet as part of China. Read the article.

Parts of what are now considered Tibet have been "owned" by China as well as other countries.

Half this "free Tibet" crap is really just anti-Chinese sentiment. Is China very harsh and do they not respect human rights... yes... this is true. So I understand the sentiment. I just like to point out that there are 2 sides to every story.

When China "liberated" Tibet from uner England's thumb... many Tibetans were happy about it.

China ain't "freeing" Tibet... it's just NOT gonna happen. The victor writes the history books. 500 years from now no one will question wether or not Tibet is part of China.

So like... I honestly don't really care much for China... but the point is that NO ONE HERE is looking at their side.

Comparing Mao to Hitler... ok... there is some similarities I am sure.

I think though China taking Tibet is not like how Hitlet invade Western Europe or Russia. It's more comparable to how Hitler took Romania (i.e where he was born). Romania had been part of "Germany"... and when Hitler took Romania... nobody squaked too loudly.

Had hitler stopped at Romania and never invade Poland.... there would have been no WWII.

Mao did stop at Tibet.

I wasn't comparing them so much as pointing out when most of the world decided conquering other countries wasn't a good thing.

Romania? Don't you mean Austria?
