Corporate Rape of the Church

Postby SolidLuigi on Sun Mar 16, 2008 7:50 pm

I'm not a practicing catholic anymore and I'm still offended by this. Hell, even if it was a religion I've never been involved with I'd still be offended. It's basically a slap in the face to true believers. The kicker is the free iPhone offer, and if you are gracious enough to recommend 4 other people then your odds increase! If you are a practicing Christian or of other religious belief I'm interested on what you think of this site.

I wonder what money making scheme is behind this

What bothers me most is not the idea of the ad but the motivations of the people running it. The idea is pretty scummy though.

I think it is cool! Then we could have a TTL version as well! Talk To Lucifer! It would be so popular! Anybody want to invest in my scheme? Talk to Satan anyone? (*YOUR SOUL BELONGS TO ME*--a deep deep voice speaks to you from your cell phone!)

hey william18,

since you're figuring all kinds of stuff out right now, i wanted to take the opportunity to tell you about gravity. you probably have no idea what it is, since it took you this long to figure out SolidLuigi's name.

okay, so gravity.... it's like this. there was once this great warrior named Norse, who was so offensive he got banned from the forums. this was many moons ago. anyway, the gods decided these bans were in place to hold everyone down to the ground.

sort of like rubber bands. in fact, that's why the gods created rubber bands, to remind you forever of being banned to the earth.

this is why we have hurricaines and Super AIDS, because people fly in airplanes. and in defiance of the gods' will, people are getting unbanned from the earth. sometimes even to the moon, which made the gods' so pissed off, they created TheProwler to forever suck up CC.

well, i hope this helps.

your new friend,

also, Catholics are ridiculous. Theological nightmare, to be completely honest.

the Reformation rethought and fixed an awful lot of the problems with the Catholic philosophy made endemic by reinforcement in the form of 'tradition'.

Catholics explain away an awful lot by using argumentums ad antiquitatem that simply fall short.

of course, all organized religion is ridiculous. but the Catholics especially so.

Presbyterians are still ridiculous, don't get me wrong, but at least their more academic about everything. using many sources in addition to the Bible to add to the understanding of the world.

Hmm. But the reformists/protestants replaced some catholic garbage with their own garbage (eg predestination) and of course, the protestant work ethic and(remarkably) an even more repressive sexual morality than the catholics.
On the whole (and its a lesser of two evils, i agree) the Catholics are more tolerant-more live and let live i think.

(Their big black mark, the anti abortion thing, is quite recent-medieval catholics didnt give a damn about abortion).

Catholics like to have sex with everything and everyone, and then go to confessional and start all over again.

guess it depends on the church. what you describe above is, i agree with you, common of many protestant churches. especially the Baptists (worse than Catholics).

i mean the Presbyterian churches like the one I grew up in. we'd hear Eugene O'Neill and Schopenhauer quoted in sermons next to the gospel... to give you an idea.

the church i grew up in views Christianity more as a philosophy than a religion.

basically:

be nice to people (and they will probably be nice to you, and if they aren't you're justified in fucking them up).

take care of the poor. the widows. the orphans.

basically, just be nice to people.

and then the whole description of why that's damn near impossible, and the war within, and the questions of existence, origin and explanations of the universe. i'd say that the Presbyterianism i grew up under meshes better with Science than anything else i've been exposed to.

and as to the Calvinist idea of Predestination, i always liked what one former preacher said about it. i'm paraphrasing but, "you know, i don't think anyone can reconcile predestination with free will, cause none of us are God. we're just not gonna be able to get our heads around it. like the Terminator Paradox. You're just gonna have to live with it, John Connor."

fair enough, and you have the right to do that. for me, i value the stories from the Bible the same way i value Aesop's Fables, or any story used for the purpose of teaching.

illustration and dramatization are so common in today's methods of teaching, and have been around at least as long as the Bible.

for the most part, the stories serve a good purpose, although one must be careful not to focus too closely on any one. never forget the theme of the Bible as a whole... at least, that's what i was taught.

and i agree with you, organized religion is basically bullshit. you've taken what i've said out of context, and twisted it to your own purposes. which i should have expected, i suppose.

really, there was no reason for you to engage the text of my post on its own terms... no no. you had to engage it on your own terms, and twist what i was saying.

well, thank you for that. hopefully this post here will steer people back to the intended meaning of my post.

that it is the PHILOSOPHY that matters, NOT THE FUCKING GODDAMN RELIGION MOTHERFUCKING JESUS CHRIST HAVE YOU GOT THAT?

are we clear now? has it been spelled out clearly enough?

also, you say you can do it all on your own. i'd be curious as to how. the structure of the philosophy contained within the Bible helps create a moral dialectic to which situations we come up against can be applied. to give a sense of the moral route to take.

even Kant borrowed heavily from Christian teachings in order to create a logical reason for morals.

and you should read Kierkegaard. I think you'd agree with him. i know i sure do.

I wouldn't quite say that's accurate...I believe one Pope said something to the effect that abortion was tolerable if it came before anthropification, but if I'm honest he was probably one of the evil, gay, medieval ones.

Nor would I call opposing abortion "a black mark" as if it was sme outlandish, ridiculous view held only by fundamentalists, when medical science is slowly pushing back the boundaries at which we can call a foetus non-sentient.

Certainly, the current legal justification for abortion in Britain is an outrage: they use the "right to dispose of body" argument to justify a 24-week limit...i.e, a baby could be conscious and alive by any medical standard, but if the child cannot survive outside the womb, he is not legally a person. What's more, babies have been born at 22-weeks, yet in Britain, you could kill that child as it came out the womb completely legally.
