I don't think that's just Americans, though. I think that's most people.
Very smart, in my opinion, equates with being able to think for themselves. Very dumb, in my opinion, equates with failing to think for yourself. In that sense, I think most people are either very smart or very dumb.

There is an educational stratification in our society which is behind what you've noticed I think. Generally, you're talking about the difference between Americans who have gone to college and Americans who haven't. I don't know much about Europeans other than what I've learned through CC and the few Europeans that I've met through my work, so maybe this dichotomy doesn't exist in europe? Out of curiosity, brooksie, how many Americans do you know outside of CC?

Agreed on that one, although the dumb thing seems more fair to me.

I think you have 3 categories 1. smart 2. don't try 3.Do try.
If people are dumb it is because they don't try to improve their way of life.
I think anyone could be smart, but some it takes less effort for some than others.

And then you can break it up into certain categories, such as school smarts and street smarts/common sense.

As far as generalizations go, sure. But unfounded generalizations are notoriously, well... wrong.

i heard an anecdote about Cohen that was really impressive.
apparently on the episode when he visited those Southern "Gentlemen" for the wine tasting (such a classic episode), there was a point where he had to go to the bathroom.
and he was really drinking all of that wine. he was really, really drunk.
well, he passed out in the bathroom. guess he sat down to try and clear his head.
well, when they roused him, he woke up IN CHARACTER.
amazing.
