Well, it would be better for us-as you wouldn't be allowed to access this forum/express any personal opinions what so ever.
So please move to N. Korea.

You are blessed by having being born in one of the free (ish) countries in the world-get involved, and help make your country great-stop whining, enjoy the the thrill of the democratic cut and thrust!

Democracy is the base of Western Civilization! Get involved, you've been blessed with rights not experenced by many!

I think the OP is trying to say that all the millions spent on pretty much just the candidates advertising themselves could be going to better causes like helping the sick or feeding the hungry. If that is the point then I agree, why do you need millions to run for prez? That alone limits it to only the richest or highest endorsed people in the US. If their policies are what everyone is voting on, then there should just be state controlled debates and presentations. This system we have now of who can spend the most to get their name out the most skews the fairness and does waste alot of money that could be going to better causes.

It doesn't necessarily limit it the rich – where do you think Obama got more money than Hillary? Why, from running, of course!

However, you are right for the most part.

Because it costs money to run commercials. Really easy answer.

Yeah, I should have phrased it better. I meant why should you need millions. Politics shouldn't be based on who has fancier commercials, it should be strictly based on the facts of who believes what and that info should be presented in general debates etc. No private commercials

sorry for that

You overestimate your average American. Whatever rumor/insult/famous supporter they first see/hear determines who they vote for. They need to get back to TV after all.

And to travel the country 30 times over. And that's just for the primaries/caucuses.

They need all those millions, for private jets, first class accomodations, new attire, etc. when they are visiting the places where all those starving children are. :(

That and it's already a media event. Comon, if you think any Joe Schmoe can run just because he has good policies is kidding them selves into a deluted fantasy world. It's called unwritten Presidential running rules. Hand shakes, and money. Candidates have to have money or else they're not going anywhere. The problem is not the candidates them selves as it belongs to the media, and public opinion.

I voted no to your stupid poll. Democratic elections, besides our downfalls, are still one of the best rights as citizens of our great country we can enjoy.

Well that's a bit more difficult answer, but it's still answerable...

The reason is that most Americans (or people in general) don't like to think. A lot of people just adopt the views of their parents and leave it at that. Still others see a commercial about a candidate who's promising "change" (and what candidate isn't?). Some choose a candidate based on their religion.

I think most of us can agree that all three of the above means of choosing a candidate are stupid, but it's the reality of the matter. People don't think, and when they do, it's not about the politics of something as big as the United States.

And the best way to reach such people is in a plop a flashy 30-second commercial in the middle of Heroes which stays at a superficial level. Go too deep and you lose your audience.

Not much you can do about it. Well, I guess there are two options:

1) Limited democracy, or
2) Make everyone think

#2 is never going to happen. Personally, I'm starting to become a fan of the concept of limited democracy, but that's another thread...
