i think it's fine, but getting a non-cliche gift can be quite a difficult task.
do you think it's cliche and inflated? or is it one of your most sacred holidays?

Ever since I grew out of candy (yes, it happened), I just see it as a nuisance.

Most people just get roses, don't they?

I don't like Valentines day. Too commercialised for me.

Not really but it's a little more of a woman's holiday anyways.

that's much better. people whose favorite flowers are actually roses are a very small minority. i chose "yes" on accident, i meant to choose the last option.

Yeah, my current gf really likes lilies, but hates roses (though mainly because she believes they are "cliche" as mentioned above)

its an awful day -
but having a girlfriend who tends to like these kinds of days i find myself in predicaments quite often.

I took her out yesterday (13th) and am going to take her out for dinner on saturday night - but i won't do or give or mention anything on the 14th.. just my lame boycott

This is the first valentines day I've not been single, I still don't care about this day though. It always seemed like just a day for women to expect gifts to me.
I hope someone gets a valentines card saying this though:
IronChef Foicite: well, there's a lot of reasons
IronChef Foicite: i mean, roses only last like a couple weeks
IronChef Foicite: and that's if you leave them in water
IronChef Foicite: and they really only exist to be pretty
IronChef Foicite: so that's like saying
IronChef Foicite: "my love for you is transitory and based solely on your appearance"
IronChef Foicite: but a potato!
IronChef Foicite: potatos last for fucking ever, man
IronChef Foicite: in fact, not only will they not rot, they actually grow shit even if you just leave them in the sack
IronChef Foicite: that part alone makes it a good symbol
IronChef Foicite: but there's more!
IronChef Foicite: there are so many ways to enjoy a potato! you can even make a battery with it!
IronChef Foicite: and that's like saying "i have many ways in which I show my love for you"
IronChef Foicite: and potatos may be ugly, but they're still awesome
IronChef Foicite: so that's like saying "it doesn't matter at all what you look like, I'll still love you"

Wouldn't that be epic?

I actually did that in my younger days.
i had been with a girl for three weeks and on Valentinesday i gave a potato and a sachet of salt to her.

Believe it or not we lasted for another week.

A friend of mine is getting married today....I guess this way her husband will only have to remember their wedding day, and not have to worry too much about valentine's day.

Well we are living in a consumer controlled society...

Here in North America, I find it's so commercialized it's not nice anymore. It's a social obligation more than anything else, and it really is designed to help shopkeepers make money.

In the Netherlands, where I come from originally, Valentine's Day is a day when you send an anonymous card or letter (or something like that) to someone you love but don't dare to approach on a normal day. That, I like.
