I mean real prison, not twill's basement.

If so, i would like to become your penfriend on 3 conditions:

a) it's not for anything really bad, unless you have been wrongly convicted
b) we don't fall in love and then have some awkward moment at your execution or release
c) i don't have to send you any drugs or porn

anyone?

People in prison don't have access to the internet, so I highly doubt you'll find anyone here that can TRUTHFULLY say they are in prison

Depends on the prison and country though.

What country allows prisoners access to the internet? Inmates allowed to access the internet could send messagges to the outside world without prior screening by prison officials. That wouldn't make much sense. Sex offenders would have access to porn, and chat rooms.

Those Euro's are pretty liberal... Also, I imagine they'd have some interesting blocks on, like my school does.

An internet with no email, chat rooms, pornsites, etc, that would eliminate half the net. I suppose allowing inmates access to online colleges would be beneficial, but what other reason is there to allow inmates access to the internet besides online colleges? Prison is about passing time, punishment, and rehabilitation. Surfing the net for recreation would be a waste of taxpayers money. Isn't it enough that inmates get to watch cable TV

I'd imagine that prisoners in minimum security prisons would be allowed access to the internet. If we allow them to be outside of prison for half the day on work release I don't see why we would not allow them access to a computer.

maybe someone should start a separate topic on debating the privileges we should give to prisoners?

Please don't.

I suspect it would work me into an unhealthily righteous fury as I spent several hours per day assaulting views like Jamie's. I'm currently not responding to him because he's so wrong that it physically hurts me, and I have plans for the week ahead that don't involve railing at people on the internet... but an independent thread on the topic is too much for one man to resist alone.

In answer to the honourable OP, I'm not in prison, but have often wondered if I should actually do some time as a sort of 'rite of passage' 'growing up' kind of experience. Has anybody else ever had that thought?

Most states have a minimum ratio of guards to prisoners that must be maintained. If they have too few guards, they have to compensate, which usually means sending prisoners to private or out-of-states jails and prisons, which costs the taxpayers of a particular county or state more money than simply hiring a new guard would. But, it's VERY VERY difficult to find new guards. The turnover rate for guards is very high and it's usually very difficult and costly to find and train new hires. Why is the turnover so high? Because it's very dangerous to work in a jail or prison. Assaults on guards by prisoners are very common, and of course, no one wants to work in a environment where they are always in peril of having the shit beat out of them. When overwhelmed with nothing to do, inmates, approximately 60% of whom are mentally ill, tend to be destructive towards themselves, the people around them, and government property. So what do detention centers do to prevent attacks on guards, suicides, and destruction of property? They try to keep prisoners amused and occupied, with things like chess, checkers, tv, gainful employment, and, where available, the internet.

Hope this helps.

Lots of prisons have Internet access, Google it. I did time twice, the last of which was about 6 months ago and I was told they'd have access in the next few years and both my stays were at county, not even state or federal.

Theres many forums out there made specifically for prisoners to post and talk to each other, I'm serious Google it, one's called prisontalk or something like that.

FYI: there are programs for computers that limited access to certain topics/sites/genres/etc, believe it or not...
