What is it with people and alcohol?

I can understand people drinking with their friends and for special occasions and such, but recent threads have brought me to believe that many people almost seem to rely on the stuff and do it daily just for the sake of drinking it. Don't get the wrong idea and think that I'm trying to tell you how to live your life, it's just that it seems a lot of people practically rely on alcohol with the copious amounts that some have mentioned that they drink. Not to mention getting drunk just for the sake of it. So why the apparent dependency?

I think I'm probably addicted to alcohol, much in the same way that I'm addicted to caffeine. I associate it with feeling a certain way around a certain time of day, and as that time approaches, my body starts craving it.
On the average day, I drink at least enough to make your average high school girl drunk, and some days enough to make your average college boy drunk, and every once in a while enough to make a drunk drunk. I don't skip work to go drink, I don't miss work and important appointments because of my drinking, I don't forego groceries to buy booze, and my drinking doesn't negatively affect my relationships with friends and family. At this point, my dependence is not a problem in my life. I hope that if it ever becomes one, I will be wise enough myself to recognize it, or have people that love me enough to tell me so.

Actually, the reason I got so worked up about my lack of alcohol is because I can't afford to drink as often as I'd like. So I got all psyched up thinking I was going to have my first drunken escapade in recent memory, and nearly had my hopes dashed by that stupid law. I don't get drunk just to get drunk, but being drunk is fun. Otherwise, I'm a social drinker. I'll have a beer or two if they're in the fridge, but I generally save all my drinking for one or two big nights a week.

Well, you and i seem to have the same question. I don't understand it either. I have to listen to kids in my classes talking about how wasted they goton the weekend and how they were involved in druken sexual acts and then the girls wonder how they got pregnant.
You can be smart about drinking and then there are the idiots that ruin their reputations for a bottle of booze.

It's true. Self-control is important.

I'm an addict.

No actually, I have no idea why I drink this much. I think it's mostly due to the loss of my mother. I've become a heavy drinker in about 8 months, but it's reserved for the night and I don't let important things skip for it.

According to a recent study I read about, one or two drinks (wine, beer, whiskey, whatever) a day lowers the risk of a heart attack by 30%. Exactly as much as 30-60 minutes of physical exercise.

I read a few weeks ago that it's now about 3 drinks a day being healthy.
Just a couple of years and I'll be totally in the clear.

sounds like something a brewer would say...unfortunatily correlation does not create casuality.

Not sure if Hemmingway brewed his own or not. A relevant quote given the topic.
Speaking of relevant quotes.....

Well, I know I've made this offer before, but: We live awfully close to each other and I'd be more than happy to go boozing together sometime! SXSW is coming up again.

I usually get away with 3 bindge drinking days with friends a week (gotta love nursing rotating shift patterns).
The people that really confuse me are not the drunks or the 15 yr olds trying to get served. Its the odd middle aged to early fifties lot that scare me. You know who I mean the guy that is always in the pub drinking even if you walk past durring the day, every pub in the land has them and yet their never drunk or skint b&stards. Where is satan i need to sell my soul....

They are just maintaining their "saturation point".
I used to work with a HARDCORE alcoholic. He could drink constantly, yet it would only take a beer or two to get him staggering and stupid. Come to find out it was because he always had lots of alcohol in him, it just took that one or two to put him "over the edge".

I only drink on weekends.
I am kind of prone to alcoholism, in a genetic sense. If I were to drink during the week, I would begin to degenerate. I am quite a nasty person come sunday, and need the 5 day break from booze in order to continue a functioning life.
On the weekends, however, I drink probably in the region of 40 - 80 units, spread over the 2 days.
