metal storm, the revolutionary unmanned gun

can you picture 16,000 bullets being fired in one second ? This weapon doesn’t even need to be manned, it can be left completly unattended. A silent assasin waiting for its pray with its sensors that can detect anything that approaches. The secret of the Metal Storm guns is that it uses electronic triggers instead of the traditional ones. there's also a handgun version of this

that must be expensive. And possibly easy to break. What's the range of their sensor?

What a waste of money.

They're being used in Iraq to shoot down insurgent mortars.

Guns are useful? WHOA! Since when? Oh, right, to kill people.

could be. Then again, you could just walk in front of it with a titanium block and watch it end up breaking itself.

As for shooting down the mortars... how fast do the bullets go? Wouldn't you need to be rather close for that to work?

Mortars are very slow for a projectile weapon, all the gun would have to do is lead the mortar as it arced through the air.

because other guns made the other guns useful

To me, that thing seems like massive overkill. 16 000 bullets of any reasonable size likely mass significantly more than the mortar round itself.
Same for the anti-intruder function. Utterly obliterating the intruder with a wall of bullets doesn't strike me as an ethical thing to do. Sure, they're trespassing, but that doesn't give you the right to obliterate them with an automated sentry system.

Oh, and as Skittles said, guns are bad. :)

1. That makes no sense.
2. That is flawed.
3. Guns are not useful.

1. That makes perfect sence.
2. That is not flawed.
2. Guns are useful for duckhunting.

It can't lead if it's relying on the projectile passing through the sensor.

One hopes you're being sarcastic...

While theoretically capable of being used as a tool, a sword is a weapon first and formost. Same with guns. Even in your example, the gun is being used as a weapon. A weapon used for a constructive purpose, but a weapon nonetheless.

Guns are, and will forever be, weapons. Not tools. Not "instruments for fighting oppression" (badly paraphrased) or any of the other crappy alternatives I've heard. Weapons.

I used a gun once to pick up a bag... maybe my absurd humor is inappropriate here...

Are you sure? If it had several sensors, I don't see why it couldn't be programmed to lead its target. I couldn't say anything about its efficiency...
