I don't think Serbia is that strong at the moment. Sanctions, bad economy, political issues (radicals - right wing party is the strongest but they never got more than 50% on the elections so almost all other parties form a coalition).
Now it's again elections in Serbia. This time for president. Nikolić (radical) and Tadić (democrat) are both against independent Kosovo. But if Nikolić wins and Kosovo gets independent then I predict trouble.
Kosovo will became independent no mater what the result of this election would be. Position of Kosovo in former Yugoslavia was difficult. They weren't one of the countries of Yugoslav federation. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia as countries in this federation all had right to step out of the federation, if they wanted to (by the last constitution of Yugoslavia in 1974). Kosovo had the status of self governing province, but as a part of Serbia. Milošević in 1980's canceled their self governing rights. It's a pretty undeveloped region with almost 90% of non Serbs (Kosovars and big Albanian minority). Serbs captured Kosovo in First Balcan War (1912) so they killed people and tried to make it an integral part of Serbia till recent times. Serbia claims it by historic right, because today's Kosovo is their "old Serbia", land of their medieval kings. It's a question of prestige for Serbia. I think that Kosovars will defend their natural right for independence if Serbia attacks after declaration of independence. They are training their army as we speak.
Sooooo...
Free Norse and independent Kosovo!
