I think you should repost that youtube video about the Reptilians, it was great.

I don't get it? It's a rock that's not going to hit us and is going to do jackshit to our electromagnetic field (judging by the sites threat level for that asteroid, at least...). What's the point of this?

EDIT: I sincerely hope this site's a joke...

When it passes by the Earth Jan 29, 2008 there is no threat level....but the next 19 years is another story.

That comet isn't going to f*ck up anything anymore than we already fucked it over. You can sit there and worry about the evil democrats and the evil republicans and all the conspiracies and giant comets and reptilians all you like. I'm going to go on living my life without the burden of such things. Ya ya, sheeple, I know

Hecter. you must have some serious vision problems. You know, with your head so far up your ass. Now that you've got the smell of it, I give you permission to pull your head back out. How about it?

I'm sorry that I'm not worried about a few fried satellites or a couple earth quakes in 19 years. It's just not high up on my list atm.

I think what he means is that what happens happens. If we can prevent bad things from happening we will and if we can't we won't. If we always worried about all the potential crap that could go down we (well, fine, I at least) wouldn't be able to live our lives.

You know what, Jay. I saw this story about 6 months ago on a different website and I actually thought that one day you might post it here on CC. I'm not joking!

If it gets too close we'll send up Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis to deal with it.

True dat yo. I also meant that I don't believe in a vast majority of the conspiracies and have since been able to move on with my life about them. All I can do is hope that the shit that happens doesn't directly affect me. I mean, really, this comet isn't going to do much. Fry some satellites? Most likely. Be a catalyst for a few natural disasters? Maybe. Will they suck? Ya. What can I do about it? Well, I could call superman to go and push the satellite away, but I imagine somebodies already done that... So why worry about it? Unless worrying is a giant asteroid electromagnetic field fucker-uper repellent, it's going to do jack shit. So why do it? I actually have things on my plate that are worth worrying about, like exams.

Along with a nuke, a futuristic drill, and a couple of space shuttles where many, MANY things go wrong.

Can someone tell me actually how big this thing is? Unless it's aproaching planetoid status and is made almost entirely of Iron, I think the chances of it causing "electromagnetic interference" is pretty slim. By their logic, the moon should have screwed up the magnetic field long ago.

hmmmm... interesting, I'm definitely dusting off my telescope on the 30th. Thanks Jay ^^

as for electro-magnetic effects, Neutrino is right. The chances of it actually hurting us are slim to none unless it is made of a huge amount of iron (not impossible, but unlikely)

Iron in comets is unbelievably unlikely since Iron is dense and is more likely to be collapsed under gravity. Almost all the iron in the solar system are in planets.

but not impossible, say the commet had a core of iron, frozen gases and lighter elements forming around it. So it's not impossible, just unlikely in the extreme.

Iron, and in fact, all metals are reasonably plentiful in asteriods. Of course, they are hugely outweighed by silicates, organics and volatiles, but the are still reasonably plentiful. The chance of more than a couple of hundred tons of them gathering in a single asteriod, however, is quite safely remote. The chance of that particular asteriod becoming a NEO is even more remote. And even if this hyper metal-rich asteriod decided to do a few swingbys I don't see what effect it would have. Planets have appreciable magnetic fields. Asteriods do not.

right... the only way it could have a magnetic field is if it some how managed to have an active core like earth, or somebody stuck a great big power-plant on it ^^ but I think it's safe to say that hasn't happened.

The only way it could have an appreciable magnetic field is if it was actually Mercury in disguise.

Watch the video clip on the link.... gives more insight on it.

So, jay..

You worry about the obscure chance of an asteroid hitting the planet (which we can say there's very little we can do about this fact, it'll either hit, or miss, either scenario coming down to 'fate' or chance, as such.

But you don't think we should worry about all about the current environmental problem we have on the planet, something that humans can indeed have a very real impact on and reduce the effects that industrial civilisation has created. ie, stop living a massively consumeristic lifestyle (but you love your SUV right?)

Some people have their priorities and worries all mixed up

It might be just me, but the video goes crazy at about the 18 second mark. The only point it managed to make in those 18 seconds was that we don't know very much about it. Flee for your lives!

The end of the clip is where they show how big it is. 18 sec.? That's some serious ADD.

It's not really an SUV more of a crossover SUV Station wagon. 18 miles per. gallon..... I shoulda got a 4 cylinder. :(

What does it matter what I drive if a meteor is gonna hit?!
