My New Job

PostPosted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 4:54 pm

I got a new job. I will be the most badass mid-level bureaucrat ever. It's with a government agency that most people can't even imagine existing, its functions are so far from the everyday reality of their petit-bourgeois lives. The only other woman who works in the entire agency is the receptionist. Everyone wears suits EVERY DAY!

Which gets me to my main point: How many suits should I own? I currently have two, and I feel like it won't be enough.

It'd never happen. I once used the N-word in the forums, which automatically disqualifies me.

If suits are the dress code you need a minimum of 4 suits (one will be out of rotation for cleaning almost always). For the 3+ years I had a suit only dress code I had 5 relatively cheap suits ($400-600 each) and one presentation/important meeting suite ($3,000+).

I think suits is a silly standard, but if the standard exists it must not only be followed, but surpassed.

If this job is something you are going to stick with long-term looking your best each day will eventually open doors for you.

Well, I CERTAINLY plan on buying my suits at Goodwill. Or Value Village/Savers. OOH, anyone live in a city with a Goodwill Outlet? You buy by the pound!

That's so odd, it didn't disqualify me. Although, I'm not really a mod. I forgot where I was going with this...

The problem with Goodwill clothing is that no matter how many times you wash it, it still smells like dried semen.

Since smelling like cum potpourri is pretty much the norm for you this should be a non-issue, shop away.

I own 3 suits & a tux & I'm still in school, so i would recommend atleast 6. You can't come in wearing the same shit every other day. You gotta atleast have 1 nice suit for each day of the week

btwown, I think as the only female exec, you could get away with pant suits as well, no? That would increase your mix & match choices, to create several new outfits.

Well, I certainly will look into getting some pant suits because they're practical and you don't have to wear pantyhose, but... I DO like skirt suits so awfully much.

I want my female presence to be a slap of reality.

Now, what was the need for that?

Maybe you need $3k suits to make up for your abrasive personality, but I hope that I don't.

You come asking for advice about how many suits you need. This is really a question about how much money you need to spend on your new job wardrobe.

I gave you the answer. You need to be willing to spend ~$800-$3,000 immediately for new clothes assuming that the suits you have are usable.

Then you come back with the great sarcastic goodwill bullshit.

I rarely try to be helpful on CC. Here I give you the benefit of the doubt, and you throw it back at me. That was lovely.

Bite me.

and f*ck you for having to explain the obvious to you.

Also what Wicked said is great advice. Pant suits on women denies men (in some small degree) the ability to view you as a sex object.

And at least some of the men you work with will want to view you as a sex object.

An expensive suit does not even begin to make up for that.
