Strategy Games Besides RISK?

yes, I have asked the question of doom. I've been playing RISK with my friends for months now, and I like it, but i would like to know- are there any other wargames in this style? not too complicated, and won't take more than a few hours? i've been considering axis & allies..does anyone know if that'd be a good buy?
EDIT: it's usually with 2 other friends, so, yeah. i thought diplomacy sounded really interesting, but alas, not enough players :( i've heard of the variants, but...i don't think it'd match up to the intended 7-player game, and i don't know if i'd be willing to betray them and all that, even if it's just a game (and also reviews from people from BoardGameGeek). and plus the game comes out under a new distributor (?), avalon hill in march of this year

Axis and allies can be pretty sweet, but it takes dedication. Just setting up the board takes a while. Also, it's best if you have 5 people but not necessary. It's pretty fun honestly.

Monopoly...

Kidding. Stratego is fun, but only for two players (there may versions for more than two though).

is stratego that game with the pieces that look like they're actually modified from "guess who?" it looks really kiddy to me.

Axis and Allies can be played with 2-5 players. But seriously, games can take days... Warhammer is also interesting but incredibly expensive and takes even more dedication than Axis and Allies. Also, check out Junta. It's a fascinating game...

hmmm...lemme also add that i'd prefer war games, but thanks for the suggestion, hecter, i'm wikipedia'ing it right now :D
so far, our RISK games last only a few hours thanks to the fact my friends are not brilliant strategists yet-
one game i had all of south america, and my other friend (daniel) had all of africa. i kept breaking into africa, but all he did was take it back, but not attack south america, even though i only had one border army :D

RTW style games? Or Age of Empires? There's a similar game to RTW called Spartan, but it's not as fun though. How about StarCraft?

Don't judge a book by its cover. Stratego is quite fun actually, and it's recommended age is the same as Risk's (10 to Adult).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratego

At least read about it.

stratego is an awesome game. great for strategy and memory practice. also there is very little luck involved because theres no dice. pretty easy to get used to as well

of course i cant recommend any better strategy game than chess, with so many variables and options and no dice, there is no luck in chess.

if your looking at computer games, the total war series is always a must for strategy lovers

For the next level in wargaming, try Hexwar. I played there for 18 months and loved it, taking me right back to the good old days. 8) (Eval is free BTW)

Not a board game though, is it? If it is, totally didn't hear about it.

And yes, Chess is good, and so is Go and Shogi and Korean Chess and...

Traditional board games are good, I swear. Just not checkers. <.<
