Question about Scotch

During my pre-New Year booze shopping/tasting I compared two brands of Scotch: Ballantine's and White Horse. I drink rarely and I hardly consider myself to be an expert on whiskey, but I was still suprised with the fact that White Horse (bitter and horrible) is 25% more expensive then Ballantine's (on the sweet side and tasty).
Is the any drinkers or Scotts here who can explain this to me?

I'm not a scotch drinker myself, but it probably has something to do with your inexperience. Like wine, the cheap stuff tends to be much sweeter, the expensive more bitter. At first, I preferred the sweeter, cheaper wine, but as I began to drink more, my tastes gradually changed until I preferred the more bitter wine. I suppose it's the difference between McDonalds and a fancy restaurant.

I have not tried either of those, so I would like to know what you find out. I will be drinking Blue Label Johnnie Walker tonight

And my pal ordered a $200 bottle of bourbon as well.

That makes sense. The only possibly argument against your explanation lies in the fact that I usualy like bitter drinks (I drink my coffey without sugar or cream). Then again, the fact that I am a tastless barbarian explains everything.
Thanks Hectar.

How does the labeling work? The shop had Red Label Johnnie Walker. I assume that Blue is better the Red. Is there any more colors to look for?

JW Blue tastes incredible, floral, yet slightly smoky, smmmmooooothhh as can be.
Red -Black - Green - Gold - Blue, from alright to great (I think)
Best Bourbon = Basil Hayden

Yep he got them each.
Red -Black -
Green -
Gold -
Blue They are in order by price and availability
(red being the cheapest). Red and Black are sold in most liquor stores. Sometimes you can get Gold, but the others need to be ordered.

Don't know why White Horse should be more expensive, unless it was some kind of special version. Ballantines is definetley the better brand, Jameson is better than Ballantines though I think. I take it with loads of ice and soda water.

The more expensive stuff usually doesn't taste good with normal swallows, try taking in less at a time & it should taste much better
