Greatest Vocalist?

Postby muy_thaiguy on Sun Dec 09, 2007 4:47 pm

Who was/is the greatest vocalist? Can be any genre of music.

My vote is torn between Freddy Mercury (Queen) and Sebastian Bach (Skid Row).

Also, feel free to post some of their work, such as a famous song that they are well known for.

Bach
18 and Life

Freddy
Bohemian Rapsody

Dave Gillham from early Deep Purple. Freddiie (RIP) was a brilliant showman, I've seen Queen live, but I dont think he was the best vocalist.

Otis Reading, he could make your eyes water with a lightest inflection of his milk-chocolate, soulful call.

Lou Rawls (no joke) Nina Simone, Gladys Knight... millions

But there are some damn fine Opera singers too.. Pavo was pretty good.

To listen to: Marvin Gaye.

To have the voice: Barry White, hands down. The things he's done for me...

I was waiting for someone to say Pavarotti.

I myself wouldn't know enough about singers and what specifically makes a good to name one person, but I agree with a lot of the people already named.

Where does Geoff Tate fit in your rating system Muy?

I agree with Paradicecity9 on Bruce Dickenson smoking Bach.

Well, if people would post a link to some of their person's work, I might be able to help out on that a little bit, but so far, I'm the only one to have provided a link, and for both of the guys I mentioned.

Ok but you better study up on these two key voices of the '80s you keep saying were your favorite musical times.

Keeping in mind this is live, not like that polished studio link you provided of Sebastian trust me live there's a bigger gap than on CD too.

Geoff Tate with his band Queensryche.

Queensryche didn't see the same commercial sucess as Iron Maiden and Skid Row but most people agree they are a much better out fit musically.

Well, why didn't you just say Queensryche, I have heard a few of their songs, and Geof Tate is a good vocalist. I just have a hard time remembering all of the 80's vocalists, you kow.

Now if we're talking vocalists, i think i'll throw a name into the ring

Davey Havok (from AFI)

*disclaimer*

Their most recent album (the one that most people would be familiar with) is absolute monkey crap, and this nomination is by no means claiming that I like their last album.

Here's one of their older ones

http://youtube.com/watch?v=R34SA1qTfQw

He has a massive range and his screams a sick

EDIT: When listening please have an open mind, it's obviously different but that's why I like it, why listen to people who sound the same as everyone else?

Oh I see, don't call me a cow.

I could never quite get into the themes but there were a few songs that I liked and watching them play operation mind crime complete live is pretty impressive.

Suite sister Mary

Here's a short clip from last year, suffers from audio suckage but you can tell his voice is still there.

These guys have been going for 22+ years. I saw them open for Kiss when the make up came off.

Of course that's a solid shout out for the Gene and Paul show isn't it? I'm not a giant kiss fan but if you don't like a bunch of their songs you don't like music.
