Having been a fan of Risk for many many years, and knowing that users here must also be fans of the game I like to ask a simple question.

Given that there are so many things you can do these days for entertainment, from sophisticated games on consoles, PCs, handhelds, mobiles, or even other forms such as browsing, watching YouTube and all the rest of it, is time spent playing Risk is getting less?

How do you measure your own time spent on the game? Are you playing more games or less number of them? Of course, I like you to include any form of Risk game, whether board games, other online Risk games, or computer Risk games.

I am fascinated by looking at Google Trends on "risk game".

The curve is slightly descending over time. Of course this is just one aspect of it, meaning that people are typing "risk game" less in Google.

I like to know what your views are, where do you think Risk will be in 5 years time, or even beyond given the wide range of entertainment devices we will have?

Well, I enjoy CC, because I can play with people online, and because I'm an only child, I play on here more then I do in real life.

I used to be addicted to the board game when I was younger. I would actually get cravings to play a game and dominate the world. Not so much anymore though...

I played Risk as a child, but ran out of folks to play with when I went to College.

I had an early computer version until that computer crashed.

I began looking for online game sites because I ran out of books to read at the library and wanted something to do while feeding my infant, calming him, etc. I got addicted and now play when he is napping and between various other chores.

As for numbers, I cannot say for sure, but I think games go in cycles. Risk was fairly popular among certain high school crowds when I was younger, but now games like SIM and the multitude of other strategy games seem more popular amongst my stepsons' crowd.

I still play the board game about once a month or so, a few friends get together and we play the longest, most ridiculous game of Risk ever. Most of us who play also play here so the games tend to go on forever.

It's still a great time though, intoxication + Risk = a great night.

Also, I think all board games are pretty much dying in this day and age because of competition from more sophisticated means of entertainment. Shit, we can barely pull 6 for Risk anymore and our last poker night was terrible, we even had decent drugs... People would jsut rather do other things such as watch movies or play video games or whatever then sit down and actually have interaction with one another in real life.

There are things other then computer/tv for entertainment...

I quite agree with you. Finding 6 people to play a decent game with has become more difficult than before. The usual reaction I personally get is that they can't afford to spend 3 to 5 hours sitting around a table playing a game. It seems that people are on a rush to do so many things at once that they have lost the ability to do one thing at a time, even though if that activity is pure entertainment.

Interesting times. On the other hand, it has become a lot easier to find like-minded people online and engage with them, though most of the activity is digital, abstract and usually with people you don't know. Different is perhaps the word that describes it.

Glad to see that I am not the only one who feels like that.

That's a funny video. Sounds like a documentary for those who have never heard of Risk, which interestingly isn't that many in the west.
