The Qatsi Trilogy

The Qatsi Trilogy is made up of three movies including Koyaanisqatsi (1983), Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002) that are all available on DVD. Each of these three movies has the power of causing a spiritual awakening in the viewer/listener and at the very least, is thought provoking and provides one with a better perspective of life.

Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out of Balance) shows a wide assortment of images from nature to modern living. From the Hopi Indian language, koyaanisqatsi means crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating or a way of life that calls for another way of living.

Powaqqatsi (Life in Transformation) shows images of life among various cultures throughout the world. From the Hopi Indian language, powaqqatsi means a way of life that consumes the life forces of other beings to further its own life.

Naqoyqatsi (Life as War) shows the effect of technology on human lives. From the Hopi Indian language, powaqqatsi means a life of killing each other, war as a way of life or civilized violence.

Each movie was backed by a different set of entities, but all were giants at the time. Koyaanisqatsi was presented by Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather). Powaqqatsi was presented by Golan-Globus (Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus), Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas (Star Wars). Naqoyqatsi was presented by Miramax Films and Steven Soderbergh (Academy Award Winning Director of Traffic in 2000). All three movies were directed by Godfrey Reggio with music by Philip Glass (Golen Globe winning composer of The Truman Show in 1998 with Burkhard Dallwitz).
