World Beer Review: Australia

Postby Iz Man on Tue Oct 30, 2007 11:02 am

That's not a beer..........

THAT"S a beer..........

Malt Shovel James Squire Original Amber Ale
Origin: New South Wales, Australia
Style: Amber Ale
Alcohol: 5.0% ABV

ImageJames Squire, from Kingston near London, was transported as a convict to Botany Bay, Australia, in 1787, and is said to have become the first professional brewer in the then-colony. He had a pub called the Malt Shovel. The brewery now bearing this name was established in Sydney in 1988. It was founded by American brewer Chuck Hahn, who runs it as a part of the Australasian group Lion Nathan. Its amber ale has a light but distinct hoppy aroma and a delicate balance of flavors. It is soft bodied, with clean, creamy, malt flavors; a lightly spicy, dryish, cinnamon-like hop character; and a restrained, melony fruitiness. Very refreshing.

Matilda Bay Redback Original
Origin: Western Australia
Style: South German Wheat Beer
Alcohol: 4.7% ABV

ImageThe Redback is a poisonous spider indigenous to Australia. The implication of danger perhaps adds to the youthful appeal of this innocent but refreshingly tasty wheat beer. This beer has undergone some changes over the years, but it remains one of the most distinctive brews in Australia. There are few wheat beers in Australia, and this was the first. It has a vanilla-like aroma; a smooth but definite, oily clove note; and a lemony, crisp, spritzy finish.

Tooheys Old Black Ale
Origin: New South Wales, Australia
Style: Old Ale
Alcohol: 4.4% ABV

ImageIrish-Australian brothers founded the Tooheys brewery in Sydney in the mid 1800's. It became known as the city's "Catholic" brewery and is now a part of the national group Lion Nathan. Tooheys has maintained the tradition of an Old Ale, which was once brewed north of Sydney in the city of Newcastle. Tooheys Old has a modest alcohol content, and a light but smooth body. The flavors are very gentle, but there are touches of bitter chocolate, cream, and oloroso sherry spiciness, nuttiness, and fruitiness. It finishes toasty and dry.

Coopers also provides kits for the homebrewer, and is well known here in the states:

Coopers Sparkling Ale
Origin: South Australia
Style: Golden Ale
Alcohol: 5.8% ABV

ImageThomas Cooper was a Methodist preacher from Yorkshire, England, who emigrated to Australia in 1852 and started a brewery in Adelaide. Coopers is the last of Australia's old-established family breweries. It's Sparkling Ale (which, quite cloudy) had a bronze-red color until about 1980. Now, it has a full, golden hue. It is quenching, classic, fruity (with suggestions of apples, pears, and especially bananas), and dry, with a long finish.

Cooper's is spelled with an apostrophe on the neck, but not on the main label. The barrel in the center is labeled "Kensington Brewery" after the Adelaide neighborhood.

Whilst I would consider going with Jay to chase those german skirts. One of the bigger reasons I consider abandoning my family is to return to Australia to consume one of my favorite beverages in the WORLD!!

Cascade beers and soda pops. They are in the island of Tazmania and they produce both beers and wonderfull pop.

The web page seems to be donkdown at the moment but this is really for me a step above other beers.

http://www.cascadebrewery.com.au

That, Jimi Hocking and the Ocean highway were the highlights of my visit down under by far.

I've been trying to get this out as a weekly review, unfortunately I have other responsibilities in my life other than CC & beer so I fell behind a bit. :(
I certainly welcome any and all reviews that my fellow CC'ers may have of the fine adult beverage we know as beer.
I look to spread the knowledge and love of beer.
I also have a couple of threads regarding the history of beer in mind that I plan on posting soon. (beer is the catalyst for civilization, the American founding fathers and their love of beer, beer is the reason the Mayflower came to Plymouth rock)

Yes, I am a beer geek.....

So far the reviews have included:

England: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... sc&start=0

Wales: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... ht=#689995

Ireland: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... ht=#685953

Scotland: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... ht=#694481
(was really looking for more responses on this one as I love Scottish Ales)

Croatia: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... ht=#691336
(this I'm humbly proud of as I did not start the thread)

2005, I quite liked the beach in Apollo best sand I've seen almost anywhere, so clean. Nice little town, we got to see some koalas in the wild.

I don't remember the rocks I'm not even certain we got far enough to see them. Alzimers sucks. I know there were around 7 still above water at the time I believe.

We stopped at a restaurant that was pretty funny. The guy was there alone, eating a sandwich. He said, "Sorry I've been drinking alot last night and I really need some food, let me have a moment here." He eats most of his sandwhich and asks, "So what would you like?"

My inlaws ask, "Could we see a menu." Now this might not be as good if you don't know them but he responds, "I don't have one, what would you like to eat I'll make it."

This completely baffles them and it takes well over a half hour to finally agree to have grilled sandwiches. I laughed quietly and joked around with the guy the whole time. It was awesome, the sandwiches were also excelent.

The guy and I even connected with a Monty Python reference regarding the napkins when someone asked, "Could we get some serviets?" he said, "I've got these they aren't much." and I countered, "Luxury!" It went completely over everyone else's heads while he started laughing.

I don't mind the distance, it's the cost that sucks. A couple of k each just for basic airfare and unless I "go out for bread and milk." I have to bring a wife and two kids.
